Roku Experience gets more personalized and adds new features

Roku Experience gets more personalized and adds new features

With a background in sports and entertainment reporting, he’s covered everything from Broadway to college football. He cut the cord in 2014 and has a sharp eye for streaming trends and a soft spot for Hallmark movies.

Alongside a series of streaming device and smart TV announcements, Roku has unveiled a series of improvements to the Roku Experience. In an effort to make its streaming platform even more personalized for each individual viewer, over the next few months, the company will roll out a handful of content discovery features, updates to its Sports Zone hub, and additions to its second-screen mobile app.

Key Details:

  • Coming Soon: Roku is making it easy to save new movies to your watch list even if they won’t be available for months.
  • Highlights galore: The platform’s Sports Zone is adding clips, highlights, and more about your favorite teams.
  • No need to scroll: The streamer’s mobile app is expanding its functionality to be an all-in-one second screen.

Check out what Roku is doing to improve the user experience:

Content Discovery

Roku is set to introduce a new row to its streaming menu. The “Coming Soon to Theaters” row will allow users to stay up to date on all of the biggest premieres coming out of Hollywood. The new feature will allow viewers to add big-screen movies to a Save List so that when they eventually are available to stream, they will be notified.

Additionally, Roku is introducing new short-form content rows in the All Things Food and All Things Home destinations. These carousels are designed to allow viewers to browse and binge shorter videos like recipe tutorials and home organization hacks. These curated clips bring viewers the types of content they crave without the commitment of having to watch a full-length episode.

Finally, the streaming platform is introducing new badges that are geared to helping people find the content that they are looking for. Roku will display small badges under the hero image of a title that will allow users to see if they can watch a movie for free, how much it will cost to watch on a subscription service, what has won awards, and more.

Sports Zone

Roku is also set to make significant additions to its Sports Zone with hopes of making it easier to keep up with your favorite teams and players. The new personalized highlights row in the Sports Zone will feature a collection of clips and highlights focused on your favorite teams and sports. The goal is to make the hub the first place you check to keep up to date on what’s happening across the world of sports.

Fans can also sign up for notifications about their favorite teams. Regardless of sport, just select your favorites, and you will receive mobile notifications when your favorite squad is about to play.

To further cement Sports Zone’s standing, Roku is going to expand its availability globally, beginning with Mexico. In the coming weeks, sports fans will be able to head to Sports Zone in order to watch all of the must-see games, highlights, clips, and more.

All-In-One Mobile App

The company is also making efforts to turn its app into the all-around streaming second screen. The Roku app will provide info on trending shows and the most important live programming, can control your TV like a remote, and will provide stats and info about the sports, movies, and shows that you are watching.

Roku’s free app is expanding its content pages to bring all of the details that you want to know about what you are watching at your fingertips, from cast and crew listings, IMDb ratings, trailers, and more.
