‘Severance’ officially renewed for a third season on Apple TV+
Fans will head back inside Lumon Industries for another go-around with one of Apple TV+’s most popualr shows.
The Season 2 finale of “Severance” is officially out in the world, and without spoiling any of the massive twists and turns, it is fair to say that there are still some mysteries that need to be addressed, as Apple TV+ has announced that the hit eerie drama will be back for a third season. Apple officially confirmed on Friday, just hours after weary Lumonites devoured the final episode of Season 2, that the record-breaking series will return for a third installment; now the only question is when.
Key Details:
- Apple TV+ released the Season 2 finale on Thursday night and confirmed Friday morning that Season 3 is officially moving forward.
- “Severance” is now the most-watched show in Apple TV+ history.
- Season 2 premiered nearly three years after Season 1, so hopefully the delay for the third season will not be as long.
“Severance” has become the most-watched show in the history of Apple TV+, overtaking “Ted Lasso” in terms of unique views. “Ted Lasso” has also been confirmed as returning for a new season, which might be released around the same time as “Severance” Season 3 considering the shows are seemingly in similar production stages at the moment.
The renewal announcement for “Severance” means new episodes of the show are likely 18 to 24 months away from hitting the streamer. However, that timeline could be accelerated somewhat as writers for the show have already hinted that they are convening soon to begin breaking down the new season.
Executive producer and director Ben Stiller has let fans know via the “New Heights” podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce that he wants the timeline to be much shorter than the three years it took to get Season 2 out into the world. Delays between Seasons 1 and 2 were caused by COVID-19 complications, as well as the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“Making ‘Severance’ has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” Stiller said in a statement announcing the renewal. “While I have no memory of this, I’m told making season three will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”
“Severance” Season 1 introduced viewers to the employees of Lumon Industries, which has created a daring surgical technique that allows recipients to completely forget their work lives when at home, and vice versa. One employee named Mark — played by Adam Scott, who also serves as an executive producer — begins to question his place at the company, but in Season 2 he and his friends learn the dire consequences of digging into Lumon’s secrets.
“I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast and crew, Apple and the whole ‘Severance’ team,” Scott said. “Oh hey also — not a huge deal — but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.”
