As July is coming to a close, so too does the summer in the minds of many — especially students who are heading back to class in the first two weeks of August. You may well ask which transitions your favorite streamers are making in the month, particularly in the form of new releases. Our experts have taken a look to see which streaming services you need to keep in August because the release calendar is just too good to ignore, and which ones you can cancel until at least September when their respective slates improve.

Streamers to keep in August 2025
Netflix

“Wednesday” has been a sensation for Netflix since its release in November 2022. The series explores the adventures of the spooky and spectacular Wednesday Addams, who finds herself at the equally sinister Nevermore Academy. While there, she makes friends with a werewolf, a siren, a gorgon, and other creatures of the night, all while discovering that she herself has some pretty special powers.

Season 2 of “Wednesday” debuts on Aug. 6, with all four episodes from Part 1 of the season available on that day. Other highlights of the streamer’s release schedule during the month include “The Thursday Murder Club,” a film about a group of septuagenarians who are stuck solving a real murder. The movie features a stellar cast, including Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Ben Kingsley, and Helen Mirren, and debuts Aug. 28.
Netflix
Netflix is a leading subscription-based video streaming service that offers on-demand access to an extensive library of over 3,000 movies, 2,000+ TV shows, and a growing collection of acclaimed Netflix originals. Renowned for producing groundbreaking content, Netflix has become a cultural powerhouse with hit originals like “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” “Squid Game,” “The Crown,” “Tiger King,” “Bridgerton,” “The Witcher,” and “Black Mirror.”
Hulu

The excitement for Hulu in Aug. 2025 starts with the return of “King of the Hill,” which will roll out its 14th season on Tuesday, Aug. 4, after a hiatus of 16 years. The characters of the show have finally aged, with Hank returning to the United States from a stint in Saudi Arabia, and Bobby having moved out of his parents’ house and into the world as a professional chef. What else has time brought to the rest of Arlen’s citizens in the intervening years? You’ll just have to watch the revival of the series and find out!
The month will also see the premiere of “Alien: Earth” on Hulu. The series will see the terrifying Xenomorph unleashed on planet Earth when a space vessel crash-lands on the planet, bringing humanity face-to-face with perhaps the greatest threat to its existence that it has ever faced. The series will serve as a prequel to the “Alien” movie franchise, being set two years before the 1979 original movie.
Hulu
Hulu is a video streaming service that gives access to thousands of full seasons of exclusive series, hit movies, kids shows, and Hulu Originals like “Only Murders in the Building,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Apple TV+

There are a couple of can’t-miss prospects headed to Apple TV+ in August. We’ll start with “Chief of War,” starring Jason Momoa. This sweeping historical epic series tells the story of the unification of native tribes on the Hawaiian islands, which is their only chance to repel efforts to colonize their homeland by foreign invaders. The show is incredibly ambitious and continues efforts by Apple TV+ to offer the most premium possible content. “Chief of War” is debuting on Aug. 1.

The hit parade on Apple TV+ continues with the second season of “Platonic,” which lands on Aug. 6. This series explores the non-romantic relationship between two old friends who have reconnected after a long divide. Will (Seth Rogen) and Sylvia (Rose Byrne) have a lot of catching up to do, but the chaos of their friendship leads those around them to the conclusion that maybe they’re better off apart.
Apple TV
Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

AMC+
AMC+ has some really cool shows and movies to watch on a month-in, month-out basis. Titles like “Dark Winds” and “Interview With the Vampire” are found on the service, but unfortunately, none of these are releasing new seasons during August. If that’s the type of content you’re watching on AMC+, we think you’re probably better off saving yourself a month’s subscription to the service and revisiting it a little later in the year.
AMC+
AMC+ is a premium subscription streaming bundle owned by AMC Networks. It offers curated access to award-winning originals, indie films, and prestige television. Launched in June 2020, the service combines content from AMC with flagship brands such as BBC America, IFC, Sundance TV, Shudder, Sundance Now, and IFC Films Unlimited, delivering a rich library of exclusive programming and early episode access.
Paramount+
We recommended Paramount+ as a streamer to keep last month, but it’s a different story in August. Premieres like “Dexter: Resurrection” and ” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” are in the rearview mirror, and while these shows will be releasing new episodes in August, there is a major reason to put the streamer on hold until September: NFL football. Next month, the NFL returns to CBS on Sunday afternoons, and all games available on that channel will be shown on Paramount+ in local markets. If you can wait that long, it’s reasonable to give Paramount+ a break for a few weeks.
Paramount Plus
Paramount+ is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 40,000+ TV show episodes from BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., and more. Get free access with a Walmart+ subscription.
Paramount+ includes “1883,” “Tulsa King,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and “PAW Patrol.” Subscribers can watch the NFL, college football, The Masters, college basketball, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Serie A, and NWSL. The service also offers the option to watch your live CBS affiliate. The upgraded ad-free package includes premium movies and shows from Showtime.
