A comparison of YouTube TV and DIRECTV.

Knowing the difference between any two streaming services is proving to be exceptionally difficult for consumers. That problem only becomes more challenging when you focus specifically on live TV streaming services. Unlike on-demand services, which primarily carry TV and movie titles exclusive to their platforms, live streamers largely share the same collection of broadcast and cable channels. So the difference between these services comes down primarily to cost, package breakdowns, and channel availability; so doing your homework before subscribing is a must.

But why spend hours and hours reading up on different streamers when you can use The Streamable’s cheat sheet instead! Below, we’ll give you all the details you need to compare two of the top live TV streamers on the market: DIRECTV and YouTube TV. We’ll show you how the two services stack up in terms of price, features, channel packages, and more below!

Plans

Both DIRECTV and YouTube TV have multiple plan offerings, with all-in-one packages that include news, sports, and entertainment channels, as well as genre-specific plans that only offer a selection of curated channels that don’t force the user into an all-or-nothing proposition.

DIRECTV has five Genre Packs, while YouTube TV has announced plans to offer more than a dozen Genre Plans, though not all of these slimmed-down packages have become available to all subscribers in the United States as of April 2026.

YouTube TV has just one all-in-one package with news, sports, and entertainment channels, while DIRECTV has four such plans available to customers who receive their plan via streaming: the ENTERTAINMENT, CHOICE, ULTIMATE, and PREMIER plans.

A good general rule of thumb to remember is that DIRECTV has more all-inclusive channel plans to choose from, while YouTube TV has more genre-specific plans. However, YouTube TV doesn’t include on-demand streaming services with nearly as many of its plans as DIRECTV does.

Overall channel count

If volume of channels is what you’re looking for first and foremost, DIRECTV is the service for you. Streaming customers can get 160+ channels in the DIRECTV ULTIMATE Signature package, which is its second-most expensive offering (as shown above).

YouTube TV offers 100+ channels in its most well-stocked package, including most of the top cable mainstays. But for sheer tonnage, DIRECTV edges out YouTube TV’s core channel package. The most well-stocked DIRECTV channel package is its PREMIER plan, with 200+ networks available.

Top cable channels

Both DIRECTV and YouTube TV include the most popular cable news, sports, and entertainment channels in various packages. As mentioned numerous times, customers of both services can now choose slimmed-down channel packages if they prefer to receive only a single genre of channel. Both DIRECTV and YouTube TV’s sports-only plans include popular networks like ESPN, FS1, and TNT, for example.

If you want to know which streamer has the highest concentration of popular cable channels in a single package, however, check out the chart below to see which service has the highest concentration:

Local channels

Having access to local broadcast channels like ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC is critical for most viewers. These channels provide local news, live sports, and primetime TV, and unlike in the heyday of cable, neither DIRECTV nor YouTube TV will charge you an extra fee to watch your locals.

Both services offer local broadcast channels. YouTube TV has them in its core plan, while DIRECTV includes them in all Signature plans. Both services also offer local channels in various genre-specific plans, including their respective sports plans.

Sports channels

If an all-in-one package is more your speed, both YouTube TV and DIRECTV include the most popular sports networks in their core plans, including the ESPN and Fox Sports channels, as well as Turner Sports. Both DIRECTV and YouTube TV also now have sports-specific packages that cut out other types of channels in exchange for a lower price.

Pro and college sports networks

Both YouTube TV and DIRECTV carry a variety of channels from pro sports leagues and top conferences, including NFL Network, NBA TV, MLB Network, NHL Network, ACC Network, SEC Network, Big Ten Network, and others. Both streamers also offer add-on packs with additional sports channels that can be purchased for their core/Signature channel plans; YouTube TV’s Sports Plus add-on costs $11 per month, and the DIRECTV Sports Pack costs $15 per month.

YouTube TV is the sole distributor of the NFL’s out-of-market games package NFL Sunday Ticket. Viewers can bundle it with a YouTube TV base plan, or sign up for it on its own through the YouTube TV Primetime Channels marketplace. YouTube TV is also one of the only live TV streamers with NBC Sports Network in its core plan, and its genre plans with sports channels; NBCSN carries a selection of soccer games and other events that are otherwise only found on Peacock.

Regional sports networks

DIRECTV has the major edge over YouTube TV when it comes to regional sports networks. The YouTube TV RSN selection is extremely limited; the service essentially offers only NBC Sports regional channels in their respective markets, but there is no extra fee to receive those channels where applicable.

On the other hand, DIRECTV has almost all the top RSNs from around the country, with the exception of NBC Sports Philadelphia. Viewers will have to pay an RSN fee of up to $17 per month (subject to change) to watch RSNs with DIRECTV, but all customers who buy into a CHOICE or higher Signature package get them included. RSNs can also be purchased with DIRECTV’s MySports Genre Pack with the MyHome Team Mini Pack, which costs $20 per month on top of the base price.

Top features

Multiview

YouTube TV is a feature-rich service, but the one that stands out the most is its multiview. In spring 2026, YouTube TV began rolling out a fully customizable multiview that’s compatible with all channels in its package.

DIRECTV is also trying to up its multiview game, and has launched a feature it calls Mix Channels, with pre-selected channel combos. It’s not at the level of YouTube TV, however, since viewers cannot currently swap channels in and out of their DIRECTV multiview.

Free DVR

Not much difference between the two streamers here. Both YouTube TV and DIRECTV offer unlimited cloud DVR, and will allow you to store your recordings for nine months.

Simultaneous streams

DIRECTV allows for three simultaneous streams outside your home network, or unlimited streams while you’re at home.

YouTube TV only allows three simultaneous streams in the home or on the go. Customers who want to upgrade to unlimited streams at home can buy the 4K Plus add-on from YouTube TV, costing $10 per month on top of a base package.

Ultra-High-Definition 4K

DIRECTV and YouTube TV offer a limited selection of 4K, but only DIRECTV provides that content for free. The streamer has special channels set up for 4K sports and other live events, and all customers of each plan can watch that content at no extra cost, as long as the channel offering the 4K event is available in their plan.

YouTube TV, on the other hand, makes customers pay an extra $10 per month for the 4K Plus add-on pack to watch any UHD 4K programming. This add-on does not mean YouTube TV customers get to watch all content in 4K, only the content that channels choose to broadcast in that resolution.

Which service is a better value?

Although there are clear advantages and drawbacks to both DIRECTV and YouTube TV, in The Streamable’s view, DIRECTV is the better value proposition. Let’s start with the on-demand streaming access: DIRECTV offers customers free Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max accounts with its MyEntertainment Genre Pack, and also provides ESPN Unlimited to all MySports customers and Signature package subscribers as well. Customers who opt to receive their Signature plan through a Gemini device will have to pay an extra fee, but get Disney+ and Hulu included in their package for free, as well.

YouTube TV will offer ESPN Unlimited free alongside its Sports genre plan at some point in 2026, but that’s it. Customers can head to the YouTube TV Primetime Channels digital store to purchase add-on subscriptions, but Primetime Channels does not grant YouTube TV subscribers free access to any streamers.

DIRECTV also does not force viewers to pay extra for 4K content. To be sure, there isn’t a huge amount of 4K TV to watch currently, as most programmers don’t have the equipment needed to broadcast in 4K. But that only makes being asked to pay an extra $10 per month for 4K streaming an even bigger slap in the face for YouTube TV subscribers.

Which service has better genre packs?

YouTube TV certainly has more genre packs, though there’s a real argument to be made that DIRECTV’s are better. The choices available with DIRECTV are more basic; plans are only built around one theme for the most part. DIRECTV only sells one combo of its Genre Packs, the MySports and News plan for $80 per month.

YouTube TV’s genre plan offerings are more numerous, but even so there are some gaps. For example, while DIRECTV offers a kids-only plan for $20 per month, YouTube TV’s cheapest genre plan still costs more than $50 per month. It’s hard to say if DIRECTV or YouTube TV has better genre-specific plans, but there are some key differences to be aware of.

Which service is right for you?

This question is a lot more subjective than it used to be. Both DIRECTV and YouTube TV have a lot of points in their favor, and each delivers pay-TV packages stuffed with popular channels that have been in high demand for decades.

Tech-forward users who love great features like a customizable mutliview should probably lean toward YouTube TV. This service melds the best parts of streaming and cable, using its digital platform to offer customers the ability to purchase add-ons, choose between a large number of genre plans, and watch their channels on an advanced platform that is constantly searching for ways to improve.

If value is more your focus, lean toward DIRECTV. This service includes on-demand streaming services at no additional cost with multiple packages, and includes 4K streaming free with its subscriptions. DIRECTV’s Signature packages are more expensive than YouTube TV’s core plan, but its Genre Packs are where the real value can be found.

No matter which you choose, you’ll get a great replacement for that old cable package that piled fees on top of fees. Hopefully, our comprehensive guide has helped you tell the difference between the two services to more easily choose the right one for your needs.
