Taking a closer look at DIRECTV’s MySports Genre Pack
If it’s sports you want, it’s sports you get — MySports has all the networks you want and none of the fluff you don’t.
Sports streaming has been the proverbial thorn in the side of cord-cutters for years, but thankfully, we’re moving towards services that make it much easier to stream the sports you want with less fuss. With so many streamers and packages out there, it’s honestly exhausting trying to hunt down the ones that actually include the sports channels you need for all of the games you want to watch — or figuring out how to avoid paying for a bloated 100-channel bundle just to watch one team. DIRECTV has tried to cut through all that with its Genre Packs, and the MySports package is the one built for people who want all the sports and none of the fluff.
After spending some time with DIRECTV and already taking the Gemini Air for a spin, I wanted to see how DIRECTV handles a sports-focused mini-bundle. So I’ve been kicking the tires on the MySports pack to see if a leaner sports lineup actually works day-to-day — and if it really gives fans enough without requiring yet another add-on.

What MySports includes
MySports is designed for people who want to watch actual games — not lifestyle channels, not a billion random cable networks, and not streaming bundles they’ll never even use. Just straight-up sports coverage and the channels that matter most during peak season matchups and playoffs. Thankfully, MySports has most (and in some cases, all) of what you need and nothing you don’t. It’s specifically designed for streaming the majority of sports, and it does that job very well.
At $59.99 per month, perhaps the biggest draw of MySports — depending on your market — is the live local channels, including ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox. Those alone are worth the price for many, but throw in TNT, TBS, ESPN networks — including ESPN Unlimited — and others, and you’ve got yourself a well-rounded sports fan’s dream package. Together, this is basically all the good stuff without jumping through hoops or stacking multiple subscriptions. No weird paywalls, no hidden add-ons, just the channels that actually air games.
And unlike bundles that pull you into a ton of stuff you don’t care about, MySports trims everything down so you’re paying specifically for game coverage, key sports programming, and the national/local combos you realistically need to follow your teams.

What it’s like to use day-to-day

The package works just like any other, showing you all the included channels in the guide. The whole point is that it’s leaner, so the guide feels clearer and faster to skim, so you can easily get to the games you want to watch instead of wading through 100+ channels just to find something. There’s ABC for the Saturday matchups, CBS and Fox for NFL Sundays, and a quick flip to ESPN or ESPN2 for weekday games, then over to TNT or TBS once the NBA or MLB playoffs begin. It’s all there. Plus MLB Network, FS1, FS2, NFL Network, and more.
I certainly can’t leave out one of the best features, multiview. This alone may be worth the admission price for some. MySports features Sports Mix and Local Mix channels, providing a preset view of four channels for your multi-game viewing pleasure. While the channels aren’t customizable, they are certainly worth their weight in gold when you want to watch multiple games or keep everybody happy on football Sundays.
And because it doesn’t bury the guide in entertainment channels, it’s surprisingly easy to keep track of who’s playing and where. If you’re the kind of person who flips back and forth between games, or you like the channel-surfing vibe to just swap through live games, this setup hits that sweet nostalgia while still being clean and modern.
Who is MySports for?
If you’re a sports-centric household — or even just a single obsessed sports fan — MySports is absolutely in your wheelhouse. It’s built for people who want coverage of all the major professional leagues, including local networks (where available) and league-specific networks. You’ll get playoff coverage, national games, college games, and much more.
The only downside is, you guessed it, Regional Sports Networks. As of now, MySports doesn’t throw RSNs into the mix, so for me, that means still needing [SNY](Sportsnet New York) to watch the Mets, for example. While there are certainly ways to get RSNs without a full package now, it still means an extra cost above the $60 MySports package.
Game on
MySports isn’t trying to be a full cable replacement. It’s intentionally built for sports-first viewers who know precisely what they want. You’ll get the networks that actually broadcast games, the local channels that matter (again, dependent on your market), and the national channels that air the playoffs. There are no included RSNs, but what you do get is a slew of channels that may very well offset that downside, depending on what you want to watch and what teams you follow.
By focusing strictly on the channels sports fans use most, DIRECTV avoids the bloated, overwhelming lineups of traditional bundles while keeping the essentials right in front of you. It’s a focused, no-nonsense sports package that nails the basics and cuts the clutter.
If you want reliable access to your favorite leagues without spending for a mountain of non-sports channels, the MySports pack is one of the easiest recommendations out there.
