The (streaming) price of being a New York sports fan
The (streaming) price of being a New York sports fan
From Brooklyn to Queens to Jersey to the Bronx and everything in between, it’s tough to find a streamer for all NY sports fans.
Being a sports fan in the New York market has its perks. There are plenty of teams to choose from in all of the big professional sports (though your teams are mostly chosen for you at birth), and you always have something to complain about since most of them won’t be very good at the same time. The biggest drawback, however, is actually being able to watch all of your favorite teams, even if you actually reside in the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area, which is the home for the Mets, Yankees, Jets, Giants, Knicks, Nets, Devils, Islanders, and Rangers. Complain all you want, but far-away teams like the Buffalo Bills and Sabres — while technically in the state of New York — don’t count for the sake of this market or article.
Start streaming DIRECTV & save up to $30 off your 1st mo. of service! Learn how.
Streaming prices have gotten expensive, and there’s no better example of that than trying to stream all of these in-market teams, especially if your allegiances cross the alliances. It would make too much sense to be able to use one or even two streaming apps to watch all of your favorite hometown teams, but instead, you need at least three separate streaming subscriptions to catch most of the games. If you want to watch all of the games, you need even more.
No matter how you break it down, being a New York sports fan is an expensive endeavor. Come with us as we take a look at the high price of being a sports-loving Gothamite.
MLB
New York Mets

To watch the New York Mets, you’ll need Sportsnet New York (SNY) to catch most of the regular-season games. SNY is available on DIRECTV, Hulu + Live TV, or through the MLB.TV app. The cheapest option for SNY will be through either of the live TV streaming services at around $80 per month, which also gets you access to games that may be on other channels like ESPN as well. These are the most bang-for-your-buck options, whereas SNY via MLB.TV in-market will run you $130 for the season and only gets you SNY.

New York Yankees

To watch the New York Yankees, most regular-season games are available on YES, which is also available on DIRECTV and Fubo. Additional games can be found on Prime Video using the traditional YES broadcast team.
Alternatively, Yankee fans can use the Gotham Sports App to view YES for $25 per month or $240 per year. That being said, the Gotham Sports App provides access to other NY teams as well, so opting for the all-inclusive plan might be a better option — but more on that later.

NFL
New York Giants and New York Jets

If you want to watch all the live games this season for the New York Giants and New York Jets, you’ll need a plethora of channels. Fox, NBC, and CBS are the main networks for regular-season games, but you’ll also need access to Prime Video and ESPN as well. This season, the Jets also have one game on the NFL Network.
The one saving grace for NFL teams is that there are no RSNs, so watching your local teams is not nearly as confusing as the MLB.

NBA
With the start of the 2025-26 NBA season, there will be an influx of streaming exclusive games. These national broadcasts will air on Peacock and Prime Video. While the first portion of the broadcast schedule has been released, later legs of the season will be announced in the coming months. So, keep it in mind that the Knicks and Nets both might end up with additional games on those platforms this year as well.
New York Knicks

The New York Knicks regular-season games are mainly broadcast on MSG, which is another upvote for the Gotham Sports App, though both Fubo and DIRECTV have it in various packages as well. Going this route, you’ll also have access to national basketball broadcasts on ABC, ESPN, and NBC, which you won’t get through Gotham Sports.

Brooklyn Nets

Regular-season Brooklyn Nets games can be viewed mostly on YES and also through the Gotham Sports App. Playoffs and nationally-broadcast games will be on other networks, again finding DIRECTV or Fubo to be the best options for everything.

NHL
New York Rangers

For the New York Rangers, MSG is your ticket to most regular-season games. There’s the usual mix of nationally broadcast games on TNT, ABC, and ESPN scattered in as well. The Gotham Sports App gets another vote here, but MSG can also be found on Fubo and DIRECTV, where you can easily find the aforementioned networks as well as national broadcasts for a more all-encompassing approach.

New Jersey Devils

More of the same for the New Jersey Devils, with a large amount of games on MSG along with the traditional national networks. Devils games can also be accessed through a Gotham Sports subscription as well. We’d take Fubo or DIRECTV as a streamer of choice for the Devils, as you get a slew of other channels in the mix, and will be able to watch nearly all of the regular-season matchups.

Yup, you guessed it — MSG (sensing a theme here?). There will be a select number of national games on TNT, ESPN, and the like, so you’ll want to take a look at Fubo or DIRECTV as those are your best options, with games also being available through Gotham Sports

Okay, so we’re really only outcasting one Buffalo team here (sorry, Bills fans), since the Sabres are also available through Gotham Sports with most games being broadcast in-market on MSG for Western New York. Fubo and DIRECTV are the services you’re after, Buffalo fans, which will get you most in-market and national games for the season.

Okay, so what’s the cost?

Your best streaming option to get your fill of New York sports is going to be the DIRECTV Choice plan, which starts at $90 per month. This is hands down the best bang for your buck service on which you’ll find MSG, SNY, YES, and national networks like TNT and ESPN. You’ll be able to stream most games across all the leagues — but not all of them. As if it weren’t already confusing enough as to what channels you need, you’ll also have to keep in mind that the provided channels vary greatly depending on what market you’re in, thanks to blackouts and other restrictions. So just because you live in the NY area doesn’t always mean you’ll be able to stream all the games you want. Confusing? Yes. Dumb? Absolutely.
Mets fans might want to check out SNY through MLB.TV for $25 per month (or $125 for the season). This is only for SNY, however, so if you only want to watch the Mets, it might make sense for you; otherwise, stick with DIRECTV for a more all-in-one approach (again, depending on your market).
If you’re looking to spend a bit less (and aren’t a Mets fan), is Gotham Sports for $50 per month. This all-in-one app will let you watch both YES and MSG (but not SNY) — giving you most of the games for most of the teams — but won’t allow you to watch any games on national networks (anything not on YES or MSG). If you’re more single-team-minded, you can also opt for cheaper plans that include just YES or MSG+, starting at $25 per month for each.

DIRECTV
DIRECTV is one of The Streamable’s top choices for the best live TV streaming service overall in 2026, especially for users who want the most channels or want to watch the most live sports. With an unbeatable lineup of local, news, sports, and entertainment channels, three main signature packages, an unlimited DVR, and 20 simultaneous streams at home, DIRECTV remains a premier choice for any cord-cutter.

Gotham Sports App
The Gotham Sports App was a comprehensive streaming platform that served as the exclusive regional home for live broadcasts and on-demand content from several New York sports teams. The app consolidated programming from MSG Networks and the YES Network, providing fans with access to games previously available only via cable or a live TV streaming service. The app featured the New York Yankees, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, and Buffalo Sabres.
