Plex social features to launch on Apple TV, Android TV

The features are spreading to new devices after launching on Fire TV and Roku devices initially.

Plex isn’t just a platform for watching free TV shows and movies; it is also a personal media server and a highly useful aggregator that shows viewers where to watch a given title, along with numerous other features. In recent months, Plex has made significant efforts to boost the social functionalities available on its platform, including community discussion forums, shareable watchlists, and more. Now, those features are launching for a new range of devices for the first time.

Key Details:

  • More devices: Plex is launching new social features for Apple TV and Android TV devices.
  • Phased rollout: Apple TV owners will begin to see the features starting Sept. 15, with Android TV to follow.
  • Good start: The new social features are already available on Roku and Fire TV devices, and have seen strong engagement.

Plex has started rolling out social features including Discussions, Lists, Reviews, Reactions, and Follows on Apple TV 4K devices. The rollout is accompanied by a tweak to the Plex user interface, which returns the primary navigation menu to the left-hand side of the screen.

The features are launching on Apple TV devices first, with Android TV players to follow shortly thereafter. Plex first announced the new features earlier this summer, promoting them as a way to give users more of a reason to engage with the streaming platform.

Plex says that 59% of reactions and 47% of watchlist adds happen when viewers use its app on TVs as opposed to on their phones or the Plex website, meaning that the rollout of new social features will bring further options to viewers who are eager to use them.

The new social features from Plex are already available on Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices. The streamer says they’ve seen strong engagement on these platforms, with users creating 57,000+ reactions and 24,000+ lists in the three months since the features first became available.

Plex

Plex is a free streaming service that includes on-demand access to 50,000+ movies and TV shows. The service also offers 1,100+ free-to-stream live TV channels in 193 countries. Users can also connect Plex to their computers to stream and share any media they have on their hard drives.

…

The service also offers a universal watchlist - simply add the streaming services you subscribe to and Plex becomes an automatic launch portal for any show or movie. This saves you the trouble of looking up what is streaming where.

Plex offers a subscription tier that offers even more features for people who want more functionality, but it packs a powerful punch even in its free version.

The service offers 11 live local news channels, including outlets in Detroit, Atlanta, Memphis, Jacksonville, Tulsa, Boston, and Seattle.

Plex even offers a Plex Arcade option where you can play dozens of Atari classics plus your own collection of game ROMs and emulators on your favorite devices.

This is an incredibly flexible platform that’s perfect for fans of any media.
