Why the Apple TV is my streaming device of choice
Why the Apple TV is my streaming device of choice
Despite having tried dozens of streaming devices, I keep coming back to Apple TV.
As someone who works with and thinks about streaming devices every day, I think it means something when I can definitively say that Apple TV has earned the top spot as my favorite on the market. Sure, there are plenty of really good competitors out there, like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, ONN, and more, but none offer quite the same seamless experience, top-tier performance, and long-term reliability that Apple does. Over the past few years, I have put different models of all of these different devices through their paces, and as many strengths as each has, something has invariably let me down every single time. I’ve found Roku devices to slow down over time; I feel like the recent Fire TV changes make it less intuitive, and the only thing that makes it easy to recommend is the price tag.
It took me a bit of time to come to terms with the pricing of the Apple TV, especially since I was coming from other devices that were under $50. However, once I talked myself into it, I haven’t looked back. From its easy-to-navigate interface to its solid hardware, and its integration with the wider Apple ecosystem, there are countless reasons why Apple TV is the device I recommend, and the one I use at home.
Why Apple TV is my favorite streaming device
It’s user interface is fast and easy to understand
The user interface was one of the first things that won me over with my first Apple TV device. Setting it up was super simple, as it easily integrated with my existing Apple devices. The interface is clean, has large icons, and is laid out incredibly intuitively.
When the Apple TV device starts up, a big promotional slot is at the top, followed by rows of your installed apps below. You can customize the order to make sure that your most-used apps are at the top for easy access. The icons are nice and big, making them very easy to see and select. Switching between apps is as simple as double-tapping the button on the remote and swiping to the app you want to use.
One of my favorite features on the device is that Apple TV can support multiple users. This means that my wife and I can keep our stuff separate, from streaming apps to recently watched titles to Apple Music, when we each sign in, we know that the experience will be designed specifically for us.
Apple recently made some small tweaks to the tvOS operating system, but overall I think that they improved the experience. To me, this shows that since Apple isn’t worried about making doesn’t of different models at various price points, the company values the device it has and is continually working to bring new ideas and features to its users.
The new Siri Remote doesn’t stink
If you’ve ever used an older version of the Siri Remote, you know that it had its quirks — to put it mildly. From its unintuitive controls and sometimes frustrating performance, it left a lot to be desired. However, the new Siri Remote is a major upgrade in every sense. It is fast, responsive, and — most importantly — easy to use. Navigating through apps, adjusting volume, and pausing a show all happen with minimal effort, thanks to the remote’s quick response time.
The design of the remote itself is also a lot cleaner, with fewer buttons that don’t crowd the surface. This minimalist approach is perfect because it keeps things simple, which in turn makes it easier to control the device without having to memorize complex button locations or fumble around pressing the wrong thing. I can ask Siri to search for movies and shows, adjust settings, or even control my Apple Music library all with simple voice commands.
The remote is rechargeable and tends to last for months on end. I hardly ever have to think about charging it, and when the Apple TV pops up a reminder to do so, I just set it up at the end of the day, and then in the morning, it’s good to go for a few more months.
Premium hardware
Apple is known for its premium hardware, and the Apple TV is no exception. From the inside out, it is built to last and deliver top-tier performance. The device comes equipped with future-proofed specs that make sure it’s ready for upcoming features; meaning that as technology changes, your device will prepared to accommodate whatever those updates might bring. Whether it’s watching 4K content, enjoying Dolby Vision HDR, or experiencing high-fidelity audio, the Apple TV offers a viewing experience that is second to none.
The new Siri Remote also ties into this premium hardware experience. It’s not just about looks either; the new remote is designed to be intuitive and durable, giving you better control over your content. Its upgraded build quality, combined with the enhanced functionality, makes it feel like a true luxury experience when navigating the device.
Many of the other streaming devices on the market are made of plastic and look cheap overall. The Apple TV has a sleek design, is made of premium materials, and isn’t something you’d be ashamed to have sitting out in your entertainment center.
Easy integration with my other Apple devices
As someone deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem, the seamless integration of the Apple TV with my other devices is a huge selling point. I can use my iPhone to input long passwords to log into streaming services with ease, or if I need to quickly control the Apple TV and I can’t find my Siri Remote, I can just use my phone as a remote. It’s incredibly convenient, especially when the physical remote is out of reach and I am just feeling a bit too lazy to get up to grab it.
Additionally, all of my Apple Music data is synced directly to the Apple TV. This means that I can jump straight into my playlists, albums, and songs with a couple of taps, and even switch between music and video content without interrupting my experience. In addition, downloading apps from the App Store is a breeze. I can instantly access various apps that I use on my iPhone, iPad, or Mac and have them ready to go on the big screen, enhancing my overall user experience and making getting started with the Apple TV super simple.
Long-term product support
One of the things that sets Apple apart from many other tech companies is its commitment to long-term product support. With the Apple TV, I don’t have to worry about it becoming obsolete anytime soon. Apple consistently provides software updates for the device, adding new features, improving performance, and keeping everything secure. This level of long-term support ensures that my Apple TV will continue to evolve, making it a wise investment for the future.
Where some companies drop support after a few years, Apple keeps things going, and that’s a big part of why I stick with their products. Whether it’s new app features, updated Siri capabilities, or security improvements, my Apple TV will stay current for years to come.
It can handle basic games for when I don’t feel like watching something
Sometimes, after a long day of work, I just want a change of pace; that’s where the versatile Apple TV shines. It is not just a streaming powerhouse, it can also handle casual gaming when I don’t feel like watching anything (or can’t commit to picking something to watch). The App Store is loaded with a variety of fun, easy-to-play games that are perfect for short gaming sessions.
While it’s not a replacement for a dedicated gaming console, the Apple TV offers just enough gaming power to provide a satisfying break from traditional TV content. Whether it’s playing a mobile game on the big screen or trying something a bit more immersive, the Apple TV has the ability to switch gears from entertainment to interactive fun without skipping a beat.
In conclusion
By now, I hope that I have made it clear why the Apple TV continues to be my favorite streaming device. From its sleek user interface and premium hardware to its seamless integration with my other Apple devices, it offers an experience that feels effortlessly cohesive. The new Siri Remote makes controlling everything easier, while long-term product support ensures the device will only get better with time.
And when I need a break from streaming, Apple TV’s casual gaming capabilities offer just the right amount of diversion. Simply put, if you’re looking for a device that does it all with style, reliability, and ease, the Apple TV is the clear winner.
