Paramount and WBD merger clears in UK, more stories you missed

A popular Apple TV series is headed to the big screen, plus all the newest trailer releases, premiere date announcements, and more.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.
A list of streaming stories you missed in the first week of August, 2026.

How did the first week of August treat you, readers? If I’m being totally honest, this is one of my least favorite months of the year; it’s hot, sticky, and September — with its cooler weather and the start of football season — is so tantalizingly close. Until then, however, there’s little to do but stay inside and try to beat the heat.

If you need to catch up on a little streaming news from the week while you duck the summer sun, read on. We’ll catch you up on the latest with the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger, a big partnership between Netflix and a marquee video game franchise, and more below.

Which streaming stories did you miss this week

Paramount and WBD merger cleared by UK regulators

The merger of Paramount Skydance with Warner Bros. Discovery may be hitting some roadblocks in the United States, but regulators in the United Kingdom will not step in to block the deal, as announced on Wednesday. The merger had previously been approved by European Union regulators, as well.

Stateside, the deal is having a bit more trouble closing. Paramount and WBD are now unable to close the deal until at least March, unless it can agree to settle separate lawsuits brought by the Writers Guild of America and a group of 12 state attorneys general.

In October 2025, Apple TV agreed to a deal with Formula 1 to exclusively broadcast all Formula 1 races starting with the 2026 season.

Apple TV also features coverage of all regular-season matches for Major League Soccer (MLS) at no additional cost.

On August 28th, 2026, the price of Apple TV was increased from $12.99 per month to $14.99 per month, the second increase in as many years.

The service is available worldwide through the Apple TV app, which is built into Apple devices and supported on most smart TVs, streaming players like Roku and Fire TV, game consoles, and web browsers. Subscribers can watch on demand, download episodes and movies for offline viewing, and stream in 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, where available. Apple TV also offers family sharing, allowing up to six people to use one subscription at no extra cost.

With a competitive monthly price and bundles available through Apple One — which combines Apple TV with Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud storage, and more — the service continues to grow as a key part of Apple’s ecosystem. Apple TV delivers one of the strongest collections of exclusive content in the streaming space for viewers seeking prestige originals, cinematic storytelling, and seamless access across devices.

Recently, Netflix has expanded beyond standard movies and TV titles with the addition of video podcasts, and is also exploring a digital store that would offer third-party streamers within the app.

Netflix offers three plans – stream on 2 devices in HD with the “Standard with Ads” ($8.99) plan, on 2 devices in HD with the “Standard” ($19.99) plan, and 4 devices in up to 4K on the “Premium” ($26.99) plan.
