Apple executive says Apple TV sub estimates are low

Apple’s senior vice president of Services, Eddy Cue, has been doing something of a media barnstorm over the past week, speaking with media journalism luminaries like Matt Belloni and Alex Sherman. His company’s streaming service has been in the news plenty of late, from its name change to a bundle with Peacock to its new deal with Formula 1.

During an interview on Belloni’s podcast “The Town,” the host brought up the rumored ~45 million subscriber total that is cited frequently when discussing Apple TV’s numbers with Cue. The streamer has never confirmed those numbers publicly, and while Cue declined to give a specific number, he confirmed that Apple TV has “significantly more” customers than that. What that means is up to every listener’s interpretation, but perhaps Apple TV isn’t one of the smaller streamers on the market after all.

Apple TV

Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

…

In October 2025, Apple TV agreed to a deal with Formula 1 to exclusively broadcast all Formula 1 races starting with the 2026 season.

Apple TV also features coverage of all regular-season matches for Major League Soccer (MLS) at no additional cost.

On August 28th, 2026, the price of Apple TV was increased from $12.99 per month to $14.99 per month, the second increase in as many years.

The service is available worldwide through the Apple TV app, which is built into Apple devices and supported on most smart TVs, streaming players like Roku and Fire TV, game consoles, and web browsers. Subscribers can watch on demand, download episodes and movies for offline viewing, and stream in 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, where available. Apple TV also offers family sharing, allowing up to six people to use one subscription at no extra cost.

With a competitive monthly price and bundles available through Apple One — which combines Apple TV with Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud storage, and more — the service continues to grow as a key part of Apple’s ecosystem. Apple TV delivers one of the strongest collections of exclusive content in the streaming space for viewers seeking prestige originals, cinematic storytelling, and seamless access across devices.

Add another major American sports property to the list. DAZN announced last Friday that it had acquired the rights to the Big Ten conference’s football and basketball games outside the United States. That brings the total number of countries HBO Max is found in to over 100 overall. That kind of global reach will help it in its quest to continue building scale and creating a more reliably profitable streaming operation to either continue with on its own or to attract potential buyers with.

Netflix still has eyes on USC vs. Notre Dame game

In late September, reports emerged that Netflix had made a controversial play to steal the rights for the broadcast of the traditional college football rivalry game between the USC Trojans and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, despite those rights already being owned.

On Monday, however, The LA Times reported that Netflix is still in contact with USC about finding a way around existing rights agreements, perhaps by trying to schedule games at neutral sites. It’s not clear, however, if media partners of Big 10 schools like NBC and Fox would consent to any games being played on Netflix in any capacity.
