About Super Bowl LIX

Super Bowl LIX will see Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs face Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles for the second time in three years. The Chiefs will be on the hunt for a three-peat, a historical feat that would be unmatched in the history of professional football. That kind of dominance may rub 90% of football fandom the wrong way, but it’s an undeniable level of greatness nevertheless.

Mahomes will be backed by a supporting cast including running back Kareem Hunt, receivers like rookie Xavier Worthy, veteran DeAndre Hopkins, tight end Travis Kelce, and a tough defense with stars like tackle Chris Jones and cornerback Trent McDuffie. Taylor Swift will no doubt be on hand at the Superdome as well, giving both fans and detractors plenty to talk about.

Philadelphia has some undeniable greatness of its own on its side this time around, in the form of running back Saquon Barkley. Signed as a free agent during the offseason, Barkley joined an offense with A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and a stout line. The result has been a season that saw Barkley mentioned in the MVP conversation, and Eagles defenders like Jalen Carter have made the team a tough out on both sides of the ball.

Who is performing the national anthem and halftime show?

This year’s 21-time Grammy Award winner Kendrick Lamar will host Super Bowl halftime show, who is returning to the field for his second Big Game performance. Louisiana native and five-time Grammy winner Jon Batiste will sing the Star Spangled Banner.

What teams have won the Super Bowl?

Coming into this year’s playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs are one of just eight teams who have won back-to-back titles, but no one has ever won three in a row. Even if the Chiefs do seal the three-peat, however, they will not own the most Super Bowl championships in league history.

The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers both have six titles — the Pats’ most recent Super Bowl win came in 2019, while the Steelers’ was in 2009. However, if K.C. does win again this season, that would put the team at five all-time, with the chance to four-peat and tie the record.
