Amazon Fire TV adds new accessibility options for disabled users
Select Fire TV devices are rolling out new connectivity options for hearing aids, and packaging will come with raised tactile UV dots for better ease of use.
It’s always better to share a new TV show or movie with friends and family, and Amazon wants to make sure all audiences can enjoy that experience together. The company is rolling out some updates for select devices in its Fire TV line to improve accessibility for customers who use hearing aids, as well as blind or visually impaired audience members.
Key Details:
- Fire TV’s Omni series will roll out Dual Audio, allowing viewers to listen through a hearing aid and the TV speakers simultaneously.
- Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) support is coming to more Widex Moment hearing aids for pairing with Fire TVs.
- Fire TV packaging will offer QR codes with raised tactile dots to make Quick Start guides more accessible.
The first accessibility update coming to Fire TV is for its Omni line of TV sets. In accordance with the Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) protocol that allows viewers with hearing aids to send TV audio directly into their device, Amazon is updating this line of sets to support Dual Audio. This new feature sends audio output from the TV both to a viewer’s hearing aid and through the set’s speakers. This allows customers using hearing aids to enjoy the watching experience with a group of viewers, or just listen to both outputs simultaneously.
This improvement will be available as a free Fire TV software update in the coming weeks. Once you’ve downloaded the update, you can find Dual Audio through the Quick Settings menu by pressing and holding the Home button on the remote. From there, you can visit Settings → Accessibility → and turn on the Dual Audio feature to pair a compatible hearing aid to the TV to begin streaming.
Fire TV is also expanding ASHA support to more hearing aids, specifically those made by Widex Movement. All behind-the-ear (BTE) and receiver-in-canal (RIC) Widex hearing aids will be supported by ASHA-enabled Fire TV devices, including the Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series, Fire TV Omni QLED Series, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV 4-Series, Fire TV 2-Series, and Fire TV Omni Series.
Additionally, Fire TV is improving accessibility for blind and visually impaired customers with an update to its device packaging. New tactile-marked QR codes will ship in the packaging of select Fire TV devices, which will help disabled buyers find them more quickly. Scanning the code will bring viewers to a digital Quick Start Guide, where they can learn more about the accessibility features of their device.
Products that come with the new tactile-marked QR codes include the Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series, Fire TV Soundbar Plus Series, Fire TV Soundbar, Echo Show 15, Echo Show 21, Echo Spot, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Colorsoft, Kindle Scribe, and will be coming to more product packaging from Fire TV, Fire Tablets, Kindle, and Echo soon.
