AMC+ raises prices on both ad-supported and ad-free subscribers
AMC+ raises prices on both ad-supported and ad-free subscribers
The streamer made the unusual move of hiking the price more on its ad-supported plan than it did on its ad-free tier.
In a year where Disney+, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, and other major streaming services all hiked their subscription rates, one service that did not boost its price was AMC+. That streamer offered plans starting at $5 per month for ad-supported streaming, but the salad days are over for AMC+ subscribers. The streamer has raised its subscription rates as of Dec. 16, with both its ad-free and ad-supported plans being affected.
Key Details:
- Ad-supported AMC+ now costs $7 per month, while the ad-free plan is $10.
- Existing customers will see the price rise starting Jan. 15.
- AMC+ could be a prime target for acquisition by Comcast, Warner Bros. Discovery, or another service in 2025.
AMC+’s price increases are live for new customers. The streamer now charges $7 per month for ad-supported service, an increase of $2 monthly; or $10 per month to stream ad-free, a change of $1 per month over the previous rate. Customers can also sign up for an annual plan of the ad-free tier for $8 per month, or $96 per year.
Existing AMC+ customers have a little more time before the price hike affects them. The new rates will go into effect for current AMC+ subscribers in their first bill on or after Jan. 15. It’s intriguing that AMC+ decided to raise rates by a larger amount on its ad-supported plan than it did on its ad-free tier; normally, streamers follow the opposite tactic as a way to bring more viewers to their ad plans.
“To continue delivering a collection of world-class originals, award-winning series, and exclusive movies from AMC, Shudder, Sundance Now, and IFC Films, we are changing the price of AMC+ subscriptions,” an email to subscribers about the increase reads.
A price increase could make AMC+ more financially successful, which in turn could attract interest from outside companies hungry for merger and acquisition opportunities. Comcast and Warner Bros. Discovery both made similar moves to spin off their cable channels into businesses separate from their streamers and both moves could signal the two companies are on the hunt for M&A deals in the new year.
Whether either makes a play for AMC+ has yet to be seen, but the streamer is clearly hoping to boost its profitability metrics in the meantime by raising prices on both of its subscription plans. AMC+ offers content from Shudder, Sundance Now, and IFC Films Unlimited, and carries originals like “Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches” and “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.”
