YouTube Music Review
YouTube Music is a free-first streaming service from YouTube, packed with songs, albums, music videos, remixes, and live performances all in one place. It pulls in everything from chart hits to niche uploads, so it is common to find official tracks alongside concert recordings, DJ sets, acoustic versions, and fan-made remixes.
The free, ad-supported tier gives access to a huge portion of the catalog without paying upfront. A Premium upgrade removes ads and unlocks background play and offline downloads for listening anywhere.
Music and video sit side by side, so a song can jump straight into its official video, a live festival performance, or an alternate version with a single tap. Personalized mixes like Discover Mix, New Release Mix, and Daily recommendations keep new music flowing based on listening habits, while podcasts and user-uploaded audio add even more to explore.
Content
YouTube Music mixes official music with the wider world of audio that lives on YouTube. Alongside pop, hip-hop, rock, country, and electronic, it is packed with genres that thrive in online culture, such as lo-fi beats, DJ mixes, underground rap, indie uploads, K-pop performance cuts, and global remix tracks you won’t find in traditional music catalogs.
The library stretches well beyond studio albums and singles, with live concert recordings, acoustic sessions, fan covers, radio edits, extended mixes, and artist uploads. Because everything pulls from YouTube’s ecosystem, a search for a single song can surface the official version alongside live festival performances, stripped-down recordings, and alternate takes that are not available anywhere else.
100 million+ songs
The music library is less like a static catalog and more like a living feed of sound and video. Alongside official albums and singles, it pulls in live festival recordings, stripped-back acoustic sessions, DJ mixes, radio edits, and fan-shared covers, all surfacing directly in search results.
It also leans heavily on YouTube’s massive upload ecosystem, so a single-track search can bring up multiple versions at once, from the studio release to a concert performance or an alternate upload recorded years later. That mix makes it easy to stumble across rare cuts, regional releases, and unexpected interpretations of familiar songs all in one place
Another standout feature is YouTube Music’s original and exclusive content pulled from across YouTube. This includes live performances recorded at concerts and festivals, studio sessions posted directly by artists, and alternate versions of songs that don’t appear on other streaming platforms.
It also surfaces platform-specific content like YouTube-first releases, unofficial remixes, cover versions, DJ edits, and tracks uploaded by creators or independent artists. Because this content comes straight from YouTube’s ecosystem, a single song search can surface multiple unique versions side by side, including performances, reinterpretations, and rare uploads tied to that track.
Features
YouTube Music goes beyond standard streaming with a mix of features shaped around everyday listening. A family plan supports up to five additional profiles, so each person gets a separate library, listening history, and personalized recommendations, with music playing simultaneously across devices in the same home.
The app also includes podcasts and a growing library of audiobooks, from creator talk shows and interviews to full-length classics and public domain recordings. Add international coverage across 100+ countries, plus travel access for music and downloads, and it becomes a service that works at home and on the move.
Simultaneous Streams
YouTube Music supports simultaneous streaming, but limits vary by plan.
An individual Premium plan allows streaming on one device at a time, so starting playback on another device will pause the first.
A Premium Family plan supports up to 6 household members streaming simultaneously on separate accounts and devices.
Casting to a Chromecast or speaker group counts as one stream, and offline downloads can be used on multiple devices when not actively streaming.
Profiles
A Premium Family plan includes up to six people total, with one family manager and five additional members. Each person gets a private profile with a separate library, listening history, and personalized recommendations.
All members must live in the same household and use individual Google accounts. The family manager sends the invitations, and everyone must be at least 13 years old.
Multiple devices can stream simultaneously, and each profile remains independent, so listening activity and recommendations are not shared between accounts.
Offline Downloads
Offline downloads are only included with YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium. The free version supports streaming only, with no option to save music for offline listening.
A Premium subscription unlocks downloads for songs, albums, playlists, and podcasts directly in the mobile app. Everything saved offline appears in the Library > Downloads section, and Smart Downloads can automatically save up to 500 songs based on listening habits. An internet connection is required at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active.
A dedicated podcast section sits right alongside music on YouTube Music, bringing audio shows and video podcasts into the same space. It covers everything from long-form interviews and true crime stories to comedy shows, creator talk series, news breakdowns, and niche interest content.
Podcasts can be streamed on demand, downloaded for offline listening, and played in the background without interruption. Switching between formats is quick too, with the option to watch a full video episode or flip to audio-only when video is not needed. It keeps podcasts flexible, whether watching, listening, or switching between both.
A wide range of audiobook content is available, but it is mostly made up of free uploads, user-shared recordings, and public domain titles. It is not a dedicated audiobook store, but it still includes full-length novels, children’s stories, and well-known classics like “Wuthering Heights” and series such as “Percy Jackson.”
Finding audiobooks usually comes down to search, with tags like “#audiobook” or “#freeaudiobooks,” or by looking up specific titles. Many are posted under channels dedicated to long-form reading content, including collections like “English Audiobooks” or “Imagination Audio Books.”
Audiobooks may appear as videos, songs, or playlists, and sometimes sit within podcast-style or video sections. Because of that setup, playback features like saving an exact listening position can be less consistent compared to dedicated audiobook apps.
Parental Controls
Parental controls help filter out mature content and manage what can be played.
Restricted Mode can be switched on in Settings > General to hide songs and videos that may be explicit.
For stronger control, Google Family Link lets you set a supervised account with content settings like “Explore” or “Explore More,” which adjust which music and videos are available.
For a more limited option, the YouTube Kids app provides a fully curated space with age-appropriate content only.
International Access
Available in over 100 countries and regions, the service covers major markets like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and much of Europe, though it is not available everywhere worldwide.
With a Premium subscription, access continues while traveling abroad. In supported countries, streaming works as normal. In areas where the service has not been officially launched, downloaded music can still be played for up to 30 days.
The home library also travels for up to 6 months during trips, so saved songs and playlists are accessible across different regions.
