Gamers the world over know GameStop. While some love it for its ability to put used games into players’ hands, and others hate it for how it gets those used games, it’s a company that everybody knows. However, its recent performance on the stock market has been nothing short of bizarre, and the folks at Vice TV plan on taking a closer look at the matter with its new special: The Big Squeeze: GameStop, Reddit, and an Economic Disaster. You can watch it with a 7-Day Free Trial of Philo.

About ‘The Big Squeeze: GameStop, Reddit, and an Economic Disaster’

The Big Squeeze: GameStop, Reddit, and an Economic Disaster is a closer look at one of the great economic mysteries of the modern era: how a company whose business model was akin to a highly specialized pawn shop could see its stock price go from limping along at single digits to over $300 per share in the space of about three months.

The answer seems simple, but starts to get more complex the more you look at it. The biggest response appears to be “Reddit did it,” and to a certain extent, this is true. But is this all the truth? Did GameStop stock blast through the roof on the strength of a subreddit whose motto was, essentially, “Apes together strong”?

Was there more behind the burst?

Well, the whole story will likely never be truly and completely known, but Vice TV is going to take a run at it anyway. The response to the film’s airing on Reddit itself has been largely derisive so far, with some suggesting that Vice is out to seize control of the narrative rather than focus on the diamond-handed apes that ran up the price of an otherwise mostly-worthless stock just to teach some hedge funds a lesson that easy money is seldom that easy.

Steve Anderson got his start writing about direct to video movies almost 15 years ago. This was back in a time when video stores were a part of everyday life, as opposed to being roadside attractions like gator farms or the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota. With that writing on the wall in huge day-glo capital letters and probably moving neon, Steve migrated to streaming, which was clearly the future of home entertainment. Steve has been an enthusiastic proponent of the home theater for years, however, and seeing streaming's growth has proven gratifying as a way to fill the video store's shoes.
