Disney Plus Extends European Reach, Adds Telecom Italia Mobile to Carriage Partners

Fern Siegel

Italy’s Telecom Italia Mobile has announced it will carry Disney+ exclusively on its TIMVision platform. The service will be bundled with fiber broadband packages, reports Variety.

TIMVision already carries Netflix, Sky and DAZN the sports streamer.

The Disney+ carriage begins March 24. The deal is meant to propel the company as “Italy’s leading aggregator of premium content in the Italian TV industry,” stated TIM CEO Luigi Gubitosi.

The Italian alliance is the latest deal Disney has struck with European telecoms.

Ahead of Disney+’s UK launch on March 24, Disney has signed an agreement with Comcast-owned Sky to carry its service on Sky Q and Now TV in the UK and Ireland. Disney+ already has a deal with French pay-TV firm Canal Plus, making it the sole distributor in France. Other European countries will join the UK in streaming the service March 24. They include Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland, Belgium, The Nordics (Scandinavia, Finland, Iceland and Greenland) and Portugal will pick up Disney+ this summer.

Propelling the deals is Disney+’s content popularity. The streamer will release season 2 of “The Mandalorian” in October, which helped skyrocket subscriptions on its November release. A new Marvel adventure, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” begins in August. A 10-episode series based on “The Mighty Ducks” movie, with Emilio Estevez and Lauren Graham also premieres later this year.

The streamer has gained 28.6 million subscribers since its November 2019 launch. It is predicted to hit 126 million subscribers worldwide by 2025.
