Since last June, new YouTube TV subscribers were no longer allow to sign-up for the Live TV Streaming Service through the App Store. Previously, subscribers could pay via an in-app purchase for a $4.99 surcharge ($54.99 a month). However, starting in March, existing customers who are currently paying via in-app payments will no longer be able to pay via the App Store.
In an email to subscribers, YouTube TV shared:
Hi there,
You’re currently subscribed to YouTube TV through Apple in-app purchases, so we’re writing to let you know that, starting March 13, 2020, YouTube TV will no longer accept payment through Apple in-app purchases.
YouTube TV members will still be able to watch YouTube TV content on Apple devices.
You’ll be billed for one final month of service and then your in-app purchase subscription will be canceled automatically on your billing date after March 13, 2020.
Sincerely,
The YouTube TV team
The move comes as YouTube is likely looking to move customers away from the App Store. Even though they had been charging customers a premium, it was likely not enough to cover the fees that YouTube TV needed to pay Apple every month. Some customers chose to pay this way, despite the higher charge since they could use iTunes Gift Cards (often discounted) for payment.
