‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Already Breaks Box Office Records; When Will You Be Able to Stream It on Disney+?

The trailer for Marvel’s next cinematic adventure has accrued 365 million views in less than 24 hours, according to Disney.

Marvel is back in the blockbuster business as its latest movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” is being projected to make over $225 million in its opening weekend. After a string of misses from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Kevin Feige and company are turning to the Merc with the Mouth to jumpstart the formidable franchise. Though originally a member of the Fox stable of Marvel characters, Ryan Reynolds is bringing the fourth-wall-breaking smartass to Disney with a big, bloody, and hilarious superhero movie the likes of which Disney has never seen.

Key Details:

  • Disney has shared the new “Deadpool & Wolverine” film brought in $38.5 million domestically on Thursday.
  • The movie could bring excitement back to the MCU, which has been in something of a slump of late.
  • Disney+ will be the streaming home of the film once it leaves theaters, but how long can fans expect to wait?

About ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Check Out the ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Trailer:

Hype for the movie has been off the scale since its first promo images were released showing Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool standing next to Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, complete with a comic-accurate yellow and blue outfit. But the excitement has reached a new fever pitch thanks to the release of the film’s trailer, which piled up 365 million views in its first 24 hours of availability, according to Disney.

In its pre-release Thursday showings, “Deadpool & Wolverine” grossed $38.5 million at the box office, the highest preview total for an R-rated movie in history, and the eighth-height preview on record regardless of rating. The film officially hits cinemas across the country on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Though Reynolds and Jackman have appeared in a movie together as Deadpool and Wolverine before, they are both technically different versions of the characters than the ones seen in the movie out this week. The much more loquacious version of Deadpool is now in the third film of his eponymous franchise and is bringing back the most popular hero from the X-Men movies to help him save his universe.

Jackman last played Wolverine in 2017’s “Logan,” in which the character sacrificed himself to save his quasi-daughter X-23 (played by Dafne Keen). So the version of the character in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is from an alternate universe, and therefore has a very different backstory to the one that we’ve seen throughout the decades. Also featured in the film are numerous cameos (none of which I will be spoiling), but they are geared specifically to cater to the longtime fans of Marvel superhero movies, especially those before the advent of the MCU.

When and Where Will ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Be Streaming?

As a Marvel film, “Deadpool & Wolverine” will hit Disney+ before any other service once it’s done with its initial cinematic run. The movie will definitely be rated R, but Disney+ has streamed other mature content, including a wide range of titles from Hulu which are currently available.

As to when “Deadpool & Wolverine” will head to streaming on Disney+, fans are likely to be in for a wait if the reaction to the movie’s trailer is any indication. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is hitting theaters on Friday, July 26, and it has already generated enthusiastic response from theatergoers, especially among fans who have been waiting to see the Deadpool and Wolverine characters reunite onscreen for the first time since 2009’s disastrous “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

Given that information, fans shouldn’t expect to see “Deadpool & Wolverine” on Disney+ until the holidays at the earliest. It would hardly be surprising to see the movie stay in theaters for 200 days, which would make its streaming debut sometime in February 2025. That may not be what audiences who are eager to stream it in a marathon with other “Deadpool” movies from home want to hear, but Disney’s slumping box office fortunes from its latest MCU releases like “The Marvels” will leave it more than willing to give “Deadpool & Wolverine” a long, lingering stay in theaters to bring in as much revenue as possible.

The Streamable’s expert prediction is that Disney will take advantage of the extra time audiences have during the 2024 holidays and release “Deadpool & Wolverine” to Disney+ then. But the movie’s box office performance could dictate a much longer stay in theaters, and there’s every chance it may be 2025 before fans are able to stream “Deadpool & Wolverine” on Disney+.
