DIRECTV’s Bold Move to Pay for Customers to Use Fubo or Sling During Disney Dispute
DIRECTV’s Bold Move to Pay for Customers to Use Fubo or Sling During Disney Dispute
It is certainly unconventional, but you can’t say that DIRECTV is not doing everything it can to take care of its customers during the carriage battle.
Carriage disputes, apparently, make strange bedfellows. DIRECTV has been locked in a bitter carriage fee negotiation with Disney for the past week, as the House of Mouse pulled all of its channels — including the suite of ESPN networks — from the satellite and streaming distributor’s platforms on Sunday, Sept. 1, in the middle of the U.S. Open tennis tournament and the first weekend of the college football season. Since then, the two sides have been engaging in a war of words, blaming each other for the unfortunate circumstances that customers find themselves in.
However, in a variety of ways, DIRECTV has attempted to make things up to its subscriber base. First, the company announced it would issue $20 credits to customers for the lack of Disney-owned channels (in fairness, the company’s not paying carriage fees for the networks currently, so that seems more than fair), but now something that is particularly unheard of. DIRECT has announced that it will pay for its subscribers to try other live TV streaming services that still have access to ABC, ESPN, Freeform, FX, and the rest of the channels.
This unusual offer involves DIRECTV customers signing up for either Fubo and Sling TV via special websites. In both cases, DIRECTV will offer $30 credits to offset the costs of having to find other ways to watch the sports and shows on the Disney networks.
These offers are only available for current DIRECTV, DIRECTV STREAM, DIRECTV Via Internet, and U-Verse customers.

Which Should You Choose; Fubo or Sling?
If you are looking to watch the sports and entertainment airing on Disney channels that has been pulled from DIRECTV, Fubo and Sling are good options, but they are very different services. Fubo is a sports-focused streamer that breaks up its channel packages into tiers based on specific sports offerings. The service is also one of the best ways to stream regional sports networks (RSNs), but those come with additional fees. The minimum monthly fee for Fubo is around $94.99, depending on your market.
Sling, on the other hand, is a semi-skinny bundle that breaks down its channels into smaller packages to give consumers more options to pick what channels are important to them without having to pay are larger traditional bundles. The streamer does this by breaking up a standard subscription package into two base tiers, Sling Orange and Sling Blue. In this case, Sling Orange is the one included in DIRECTV’s offer, because it has the majority of the sports-focused Disney channels.
One area where Sling can be lacking is in terms of national networks and their local affiliates. The streamer does not carry CBS or other Paramount-owned channels, and only has ABC, Fox, and NBC in select markets. However, since it does carry ESPN3 everywhere, any sporting event that airs on ABC will be simulcast on that channel. And since this deal is exclusively for DIRECTV customers, they would already have access to all of the channels that Sling is lacking.
Both Sling and Fubo have all of the Disney channels that are currently missing from DIRECTV’s lineup, but they are broken up into different tiers and packages. Below, you can see the full complement of Disney networks and how they are dispersed across the streamers so that you can make the best decision for you.
