Disney+ Is Making It Easier to See What the Most Popular Shows and Movies on the Platform Are

The top-10 list adds to Disney’s efforts to make it easier for viewers to find the titles that they are most excited to watch.

The paralysis that you feel when you sign into a streaming service and can’t decide what you want to watch is real. Content discovery is one of the key focuses of nearly every platform on the market because the sooner cord-cutters can get viewers to the titles they are most interested in, the happier and more engaged those customers will be. To expedite that process, on Wednesday, Disney+ introduced a new carousel on its homepage called “Top 10 Today.” As the name suggests, the new row features the 10 most popular shows and movies on the platform every day. This way, if you are looking for the latest release or a hot new episode, it will be easier to find, but if you’re also unsure about what you want to watch, the Top 10 Today list can supply some community-sourced recommendations.

Key Details

  • Disney+ is now making it easier to discover what titles are the most popular on the streamer every day.
  • The Top 10 Today list will include more than just viewership totals, as it will factor in content settings, subscription bundles, location, and more.
  • The new carousel row is available on the Disney+ home screen now.

While the title seems pretty straightforward, this new list is more than just the most-viewed titles on Disney+. While the number of views is a component of determining the Top 10 Today, the rankings will also factor in each user’s individual subscription — whether they have access to Hulu on Disney+, profile content ratings, where they are streaming, and more — as well as how quickly the title is gaining traction on the site.

“On any given day, the set will feature 10 different series and/or films that are currently popular on Disney+ in your country or territory,” Disney said. “For series, engagement is reflected at the episode level, which comes in handy when you need help identifying when new episodes have been released.”

At the launch of this new feature, Top 10 Today will not be available on Disney+ Junior Mode profiles, but it does seem likely that it will become a part of those menus eventually.

A little over a year ago, Max made a nearly identical move making the top 10 most popular titles on the platform a featured row in the menu. Netflix has long integrated rankings into its home page menu, so it is a bit surprising that it has taken so long for other streamers to follow suit.

Nonetheless, whether you know what you are looking for going into the Disney+ app, or you are open to suggestions, the Top 10 Today row is designed to speed up the process from logging on to streaming.
