Netflix Greenlights ‘Witcher’ Prequel, ‘Blood Origin’

To capitalize on its success with “Witcher,” Netflix has greenlit a prequel: “The Witcher: Blood Origin,” the saga’s origin story.

The six-episode series’ plot, per the streamer:

“Set in an elven world 1,200 years before the world of ‘The Witcher,’ ‘Blood Origin’ will tell a story lost to time – the origin of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.”

Previously, Netflix had expanded the franchise by ordering the anime film “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.”

Declan de Barra will executive produce and serve as showrunner on “Blood Origin” prequel. He was also a writer on the first season of “Witcher.” Andrzej Sapkowski, the Polish author who wrote the “Witcher” novels, will continue as a consultant.

No production date is set, but the prequel, like “The Witcher,” which is about to resume shooting its second season next month, will be filmed in the UK.

“‘The Witcher’s’ immediate worldwide success highlights the impact a binge-released series can have on driving audience demand,” a Parrot Analytics rep told Business Insider in January. The show, starring Henry Cavill, debuted December 20, 2019.
