Report: Disney Plus App Downloaded 5 Million Times for European Launch

Disney+ debuted in the UK and various European countries on March 24 — and early reports say its app was downloaded 5 million times, according to App Annie.

Given the global at-home orders, many families are looking for entertainment. But as Variety notes, downloads don’t always morph into subscriptions. “Disney Plus subscribers can download and install multiple apps on several devices: Each account can create up to seven profiles and access up to four simultaneous streams,” reports the trade magazine.

Also, App Annie tracks mobile apps, not TV apps or hits on the Disney+ site, so the findings are platform-specific.

Still, Disney+ is doing well, starting with its extraordinary U.S. launch last November. The company says it has 28.6 million subscribers as of February 3. As a non-gaming app year-to-date in 2020, it ranks No. 7, per App Annie. The European debut should push up those stats.

The UK/Euro content is similar to the U.S., with more than 500 films, loads of originals and the mega-hit “The Mandalorian.”

The launch is also boon to Disney+ in its battle for market share against rival market leaders Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, as well as Apple TV+ and the upcoming Peacock and HBO Max.

Ricky Strauss, Disney+ president of content and marketing, said there also could be some UK originals coming to the platform.
