“The Crown” has been one of Netflix’s biggest shows since it debuted in 2016. While its gained a lot of clout here in the U.S., Deadline reports it hasn’t cracked “the top ten most-watched titles of the year in the UK,” and so the show will be making its final run when season five airs.
Netflix announced today that Imelda Staunton will pick up as Queen Elizabeth II in the final season. Though Staunton will hold the role for only one season, her predecessors, Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, both played the Queen for two seasons each.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the Queen for the fifth and final season, taking ‘The Crown’ into the 21st century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman,” said the show’s creator Peter Morgan.
Though the show may not have taken UK audiences by storm, it’s gotten some critical acclaim in the U.S. This awards season, Olivia Colman took home the trophy for best actress in a TV series (drama) for her portrayal of the Queen at the Golden Globes, and the entire show won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the SAG Awards.
