The 2020 NBA All-Star Game takes place this Sunday, with LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo serving as captains for the second consecutive year. The match will take place at the United Center in Chicago, with all proceeds won going to a Chicago charity of the captains’ choice.
The first three quarters of this year’s game will be formatted differently. Each quarter will begin at 0-0 with the scoreboard resetting in the second and third quarters. The teams will play for a total of 12 minutes in each quarter.
This year’s game will be the first All-Star Game since the passing of Kobe Bryant and so the format has been changed and will allow several tributes to the late Laker legend.
“The changes include a new fourth-quarter format that will honor the late Kobe Bryant, who earned 18 NBA All-Star selections and a record-tying four NBA All-Star Game MVP awards,” the NBA stated.
In the fourth quarter, the game clock will be turned off and a target score will be set instead. The target score will “be determined by taking the leading team’s total cumulative score through three quarters and adding 24 points – the 24 representing Bryant’s jersey number for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career,” the NBA explained. The first team to reach the final target score will be crowned winners of the NBA All-Star Game.
