Mindy Kaling’s ‘Never Have I Ever,’ ‘Space Force’ Deliver Big Results for Netflix

Fern Siegel

Two new Netflix comedies have scored a hit with viewers.

Mindy Kaling’s “Never Have I Ever,” a teen comedy staring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and “Space Force,” a send-up of the government’s newest space program, staring Steve Carell and John Malkovich, earning impressive numbers in their first four weeks.

Both had approximately 40 million households seeing part of the shows, according to Netflix’s Q2 earnings report.

“Never Have I Ever” is about a young girl whose dad has died. Ramakrishnan stars as Devi, an Indian American high-school sophomore who is navigating her sexual desires and processing parental loss.

“Space Force” boasts a top comedy cast, including Jane Lynch, Fred Willard and Lisa Kudrow. The series is a comedic response to the sixth military branch President Donald Trump created last December. Space Force was established, in part, to protect strategic American space infrastructures and is in charge of space warfare.

Carell stars as Gen. Mark R. Naird, who wanted a leadership role in the U.S. Air Force, but is assigned a new branch of the U.S. military.

Outpacing both comedies, reality dating show “AF Too Hot to Handle,” hit 51 million households in its first four weeks. The game show “Floor is Lava” is expected to reach some 37 million households.
