Netflix Picks Up Nipsey Hussle Doc, Renews ‘Sex Education’ for Third Season

Fern Siegel

Ava DuVernay is slated to direct a feature-length documentary on Grammy-winner Nipsey Hussle for Netflix. The Hussle project is DuVernay’s return to documentaries since “13th,” the criminal justice-mass incarceration film she helmed four years ago and released on the streamer, reports Deadline.

Hussle, who was killed last March in Los Angeles, was recently honored in a tribute at the Grammys. He was known for his mixtapes, including “Bullets Ain’t Got No Name” series. His debut studio album, “Victory Lap” earned critical acclaim in 2018. Hussle also opened the Marathon Clothing store.

The documentary is a coproduction between DuVernay’s ARRAY banner and Hussle’s Marathon Films.

DuVernay is also onboard to direct “DMZ,” based on the comic-book series, for HBO Max starring Rosario Dawson.

Separately, Netflix has renewed the British comedy “Sex Education” for a third season, which will air in 2021. Season two just opened on Jan. 17.

The breakout comedy stars Asa Butterfield as a teen who offers sex advice to his classmate, while Gillian Anderson plays his mother, a divorced sex therapist who enjoys casual sex, but remains noncommittal. The current season of “Sex Education” will address sexual assault and experiences of the show’s LGBTQ characters.
