Netflix Streams Final Season of Teen Drama ‘13 Reasons Why’

Fern Siegel

The controversial Netflix teen drama “13 Reasons Why” begins its fourth and final season today. All 10 episodes will be available to stream.

The subject matter — rape and suicide — was tough for both audiences and cast members. It charts the fallout after a young girl’s suicide and the events that led to her tragic end.

Discussing the show’s finale, showrunner and writer Brian Yorkey told Entertainment Weekly: “So the mystery drives you forward, but the emotion and the characters drive you deep. I think and hope that that’s something we’ve done every season and season 4 is about investigating these characters and their turmoil and how they do or don’t survive it.”

Based on the novel by Jay Asher, the first season, which debuted in March 2017, was so graphic, it concluded with a 29-minute documentary. In it, cast and crew discussed the intense subject matter, as well as the difficulties teen face.

“13 Reasons Why” begins as 17-year-old Clay (Dylan Minnette) receives 13 cassettes his friend Hannah (Katherine Langford) recorded, which explains why she committed suicide.

Gary Sinise (“CSI,” “Forrest Gump”) will join the final season. Seasons 1-3 will also be available for streaming.

According to the streamer: “In the series’ final season, Liberty High School’s senior class prepares for graduation. But before they say goodbye, they’ll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever.”
