New Shows Streaming This Week (8/17/2020), Including ‘The Fungies,’ ‘Chemical Hearts’ and ‘Hoops’

Fern Siegel

While HBO Max pushes its new animated comedy “The Fungies,” and Netflix preps for the return of the devil (“Lucifer”), two teens fall in love in “Chemical Hearts” — and discover love isn’t always enough. On the animated front, a foul-mouth coach dreams of ditching his high-school team for bigger things.

Here’s a look at what’s premiering this week:

TUESDAY, AUG. 18

  • “The Fugitive, Season 1 finale” (Quibi) – This isn’t the 1960s version or the movie reboot. Quibi’s version posits Mike Ferro (Boyd Holbrook) as a guy who claims he was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. Now it’s putting his house in order — until he gets caught in a terrorist attack and blamed for subsequent deaths. Kiefer Sutherland leads the manhunt for Mike.

WEDNESDAY, AUG 19

  • “Demarcus Family Rules” series premiere (Netflix) — The reality show stars Rascal Flatts bassist Jay DeMarcus and ex-beauty queen Allison DeMarcus as they balance family and life.
  • “High Score” (Netflix) — The limited series traces the history of classic video games and offers insights from the innovators that created them.

THURSDAY, AUG. 20

  • “The Fungies” (HBO Max) — Series premiere of the prehistoric one-and- two-eyed animated mushroom creatures who live in Fungietown. The focus is 10-year-old Seth, who loves science and adventure.

  • “John Was Trying To Contact Aliens” (Netflix) — The documentary chronicles a Midwest electronics whiz who spent 30 years trying to reach extraterrestrials by broadcasting music into space.

FRIDAY, AUG. 21

  • “Chemical Hearts” (Amazon Prime Video) — Two high-school seniors fall in love — with all the joy and pain that entails. But his dream girl isn’t all she appears to be.

  • “Clifford the Big Red Dog, Season 2, Part 2” (Amazon Prime Video) Clifford, a 20-foot-tall red dog who loves stories and Emily Elizabeth is back.

  • “Find Me in Paris, Season 3” (Hulu) The teen comedy finds Lena trying to discover who she is and why her timepiece is so compelling to everyone around her.

  • “Hoops” (Netflix) The animated series posits a potty-mouth basketball coach who thinks he has a shot at the big leagues — if he can turn around his lame high-school team.

  • “Lucifer, Season 5” (Netflix) The devilishly handsome devil (Tom Ellis) is back in the show’s next-to-last season. The premise: Bored by Hell, Lucifer opts for life as a nightclub owner in LA and a consultant to the LAPD. Threatened with cancellation after season three, the #Save Lucifer campaign worked.

  • “The Sleepover” (Netflix) — When siblings discover their mom is a high-class thief pulling one last job, they decide to rescue her in this action-comedy movie.
