HBO Max has been adamant about the fact that their platform will have content for every demographic within a household. Well, it seems they will soon be adding to their young adult slate. According to Deadline, the streamer has optioned “Camp,” an upcoming young adult novel written by Lev Rosen. The novel will be turned into a feature film for the platform.
“Camp” follows Randy Kapplehoff, a young, queer teen, as he transforms himself into a stereotypical jock in an effort to attract his crush, Hudson Aaronson-Lim, while they’re at Camp Outland. Things come to a head when Randy begins to question the validity of his relationship with Hudson, since it’s based on lies.
The script for “Camp” will be written by Kit Williamson, the creator, director and star of the Netflix’s Emmy-nominated LGBTQ series “EastSiders.” Dan Jinks will serve as producer through his Dan Jinks Company.
“I found this book hilariously funny and also quite moving,” said Jinks. “It’s a gay teenage love story that has nothing to do with coming out. A book, and a movie, like this would have meant the world to me when I was growing up. I’m thrilled that HBO Max jumped on board so enthusiastically.”
HBO Max is set launch on May 27 and will cost $14.99, the same price as HBO Now. At launch, HBO Max original shows will include “The Flight Attendant,” a one-hour thriller series starring and co-produced by Kaley Cuoco; “Love Life,” a 10-episode half-hour romantic comedy anthology series starring and co-produced by Anna Kendrick; and “Dune: The Sisterhood,” an adaptation of Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson’s book based in the world created by Frank Herbert’s book “Dune.”
HBO Max will also be the exclusive home for “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory.”
