MLB Agrees to Exclusively Stream 13 Live Games on YouTube and YouTube TV Later This Season

MLB is hoping that a new partnership announced today will help fans get closer to the action on the field. That’s because the pro sports league has agreed on a new deal that will bring 13 live regular season baseball games to both YouTube and YouTube TV during the second half of this season, giving MLB fans another option to watch their favorite team and players.

Every game will be available to viewers in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico for free on the MLB YouTube channel, and on a dedicated YouTube TV channel that will come soon.

YouTube TV had previously partnered with MLB — offering MLB Network to customers, as well as serving as the presenting partner for the World Series. However, the recently announced partnership deal is YouTube’s first ever deal to bring live MLB games on their global streaming platform.

MLB had partnered with Facebook last season to bring live games on their social platform, but scaled back the agreement to just six non-exclusive games this season.

There’s a lot of excitement about the new partnership between MLB and YouTube, with Timothy Katz, YouTube’s Head of Sports and News Partnerships, sharing his thoughts.

“It’s incredible to team up with Major League Baseball for this first-of-its-kind deal together to provide both diehard baseball fans and our YouTube community with live games exclusively on YouTube and YouTube TV. With Major League Baseball’s expanding international fanbase, we are confident YouTube’s global audience will bring fans around the world together in one place to watch the games and teams they love.”

MLB started its YouTube channel in 2005, and with the audience from the platform generating 1.25 billion YouTube channel views in 2018 — up 25 percent over the year prior — the new partnership is something that the league hopes only expands the sport.

“YouTube is an enormously popular video platform with impressive global reach and has served as a great environment for baseball fans to consume the game they love,” said Chris Tully, MLB Executive Vice President, Global Media, in the announcement. “We are excited to expand our partnership with YouTube to provide fans with an exclusive, customized live game viewing experience. With the media consumption habits of our fans continuing to evolve, MLB is committed both to expanding our roster of national broadcast platforms and to presenting live games in new ways to our fans.”
