HBO Max to Air 3-Part Animated Series ‘Aquaman: King of Atlantis’

Fern Siegel

HBO Max has added “Aquaman: King of Atlantis” to its content library. The three-part animated series, based on the protector of the deep, is a classic DC comics character.

The announcement was made at TCA (Television Critics Association).

Each episode is slated as a standalone, created in conjunction with Warner Bros. Animation. No release date has been set.

However, the animated series will be executive produced by James Wan, who directed the 2018 film “Aquaman.” Wan is also the co-creator of the “Saw” film franchise, in addition to directing “Saw.” He is producing the upcoming horror film “Malignant.”

Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max, called the property a “fan-favorite rich with well-known characters and dynamic storylines.”

The upcoming animated series will complement the streamer’s existing animation lineup, which includes “Looney Tunes Cartoons,” Adventure Time: Distant Lands and “Rick and Morty.”

Additional show runners and co-executive producers for “Aquaman” are Michael Clear (“Annabelle Comes Home”), Rob Hacket (“Swamp Thing”), Sam Register (“Teen Titans Go!”), Victor Courtright (“ThunderCats Roar”) and Marly Halpern-Graser (“Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”).

HBO Max debuts in May at $14.99 per month.

Warner Media is the parent company of DC, of the largest English-language publishers of comics and graphic novels worldwide.
