The tournament reunites the three best players to ever compete on the show — Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter — who will duke it out to determine who is the master champion. Unlike regular episodes, this tournament won’t air in its normally scheduled 30-minute slot at 7 p.m. ET. Instead, it will last an hour, starting at 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 7.
According to Vulture, each tournament episode will feature two back-to-back games, and the player with the most combined winnings from the two games wins the “match.” They will then continue to play until one of the contestants wins three matches. A $1 million prize goes to the winner while the two non-winners will get $250,000 each.
While the tournament marks the show’s 30th anniversary on ABC, Vulture also points out that it “could be a very fitting farewell” to beloved host Trebek, who is facing pancreatic cancer.
