The Wandering Earth, The Sci-Fi Film That Made $700 Million in China, is Now Available to Stream on Netflix
Earlier this year, we reported that Netflix had acquired the streaming rights to the Chinese science-fiction film, The Wandering Earth. The movie which was released in February grossed nearly $700 million worldwide, primarily in China. The film is the second-biggest grosser ever in China, behind Wolf Warrior 2’s $854 million. The Hollywood Reporter described the film as “China’s first full-scale interstellar spectacular.”
Unlike in China, for U.S. customers, you won’t have to go to a theater to watch the sci-fi flick. This weekend, Netflix quietly released the film as part of their streaming service.
The Wandering Earth tells the story of a distant future in which the sun is about to expand into a red giant and devour the Earth, prompting mankind to make an audacious attempt to save planet. The multi-generational heroes build ten-thousand stellar engines in an effort to propel Planet Earth out the solar system, in the hope of finding a new celestial home. During the 2,500 year-long journey, a group of daring heroes emerge to defend human civilization from unexpected dangers and new enemies, and to ensure the survival of humanity in this age of the wandering Earth.
