If your Apple TV isn’t working properly, a quick restart can often resolve common issues. There are a few different ways to restart your Apple TV, with the easiest one being through the system settings. Unfortunately, this may not always be accessible if your Apple TV is frozen or not responsive, so we’ve outlined all of the different options below. Be sure to take a look at all of them and see which one will work best for you.

Restart your Apple TV via Settings

The easiest way to restart your Apple TV is available right in the device’s system settings. You’ll need to grab your remote to get into the settings, but it takes only a second to do and should work in most cases.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Scroll to System
  3. Select Restart
  4. Wait for the device to restart automatically

Use your remote to restart

There are two different versions of the Apple TV remote, and each one of them has a slightly different button combination that’s used in order to restart your Apple TV. Luckily, identifying the Apple TV remote version you have is as simple as looking at the color of it.

For the silver remote, you’ll need to press and hold the Back and TV buttons until the status light on the Apple TV blinks rapidly. Once you see it blinking, you can release the buttons and wait for your Apple TV to reboot itself.

On the black remote with a touchpad, you have to press and hold the Menu and TV buttons until the status light starts blinking. Release them once this happens and don’t touch anything until your Apple TV is back on.

Unplug the Power Cord

This is generally a last resort for most people, but it’s one of the most effective ways if you’re struggling to get the Apple TV to turn off or restart.

  1. Pull the power cord from the electrical outlet
  2. Wait at least five seconds
  3. Plug the power cord back into the outlet and turn the Apple TV back on

These are the main ways in which you can restart your Apple TV to clear up any issues that you may be facing. If this doesn’t fix your issues, you may want to try restarting your Apple TV remote and check your Apple TV for any updates that it may have available.
