What to watch next if you loved HBO’s ‘Somebody Somewhere’
The feel-good dramedy series wrapped up its three-season run this past weekend, but there are plenty of other shows to watch next.
Pour out one last tiny ‘tini or margarini for TV’s best feel-good series. This past Sunday, Dec. 8, HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” starring Bridget Everett, finished airing its third and final season. Everett starred as Sam, a woman in her 40s who returns to her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, to navigate the death of her sister, where she finds a new and renewed community amongst her family and friends.
Few shows in recent memory have felt as warm and authentic as “Somebody Somewhere,” which also co-starred Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill, and more, never shying away from sadness or loneliness but instead embracing it with empathy toward being alive.
If you, too, have a Kansas-sized hole in your heart and are looking for more comedies about moving forward through life, check out The Streamable’s recommendations for what to watch next!
Loved ‘Somebody Somewhere’? Watch: ‘One Mississippi’ (2015–2017) | Prime Video
For more comedy centered on returns to home and self, comedian Tig Notaro mines from her life experiences—both positive and negative—in Prime Video’s semi-autobiographical “One Mississippi,” co-created with Diablo Cody.
Described as a tragicomedy, the two-season series stars Notaro as a Los Angeles radio host who returns to her hometown of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, when her mother becomes gravely ill and will be taken off life support. Battling health issues of her own, including her recent double mastectomy, Tig moves in with her brother Remy and stepfather Bill and begins a painful and painfully funny journey to reconnect with her late mother, her family, her hometown, and herself.
Noah Harpster and John Rothman co-star in the series as Remy and Bill, respectively, with Cailey Fleming playing the younger Tig opposite recurring cast members Rya Kihlstedt, Casey Wilson, and Notaro’s real-life wife Stephanie Allynne.
“One Mississippi” was strong from its start, bringing Notaro’s classic dry, deadpan style to a wider audience and adding shock, sentimentality, and sweetness. A slice of her real life, Notaro also didn’t stray from the lows, even taking on a disgraced fellow comedian and former executive producer on the show, but just like “Somebody Somewhere,” it’s a masterclass on balance, managing both darkness and light, as well as some rose-colored in-betweens as Notaro’s fictionalized self unravels the threads of her mother’s life and finds herself reconnecting to life with more tenderness and truth.
The result was one of the TV’s best-constructed narratives and one of its strongest seasons, easily earning its 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 2. Amazon initially renewed the series for a third season but reversed its decision to focus on “bigger, wider-audience” shows. It was an obvious error of judgment for the streaming, especially considering how wide a net Prime Video has thrown. Seven years since its cancellation, it’s still one of Prime Video’s best original series.
