Is ‘Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ streaming on Max yet?
Fans of Tolkien have never been transported to Midde-earth quite like they will be in this new anime film!
It’s been 10 years since fans could go to a movie theater and see a movie set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive world of Middle-earth. Viewers now have that opportunity again, however, thanks to the release of “The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim,” the new feature-length anime film that’s in theaters now! We’ll let you know when you can expect to stream it from home below.
Key Details:
- “War of the Rohirrim” is set more than 100 years before the events of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
- The movie is distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery, so it will stream first on Max.
- Fans should expect a wait of at least 75 days for the movie, and possibly more.
Watch a trailer for ‘Lord of the Rings” War of the Rohirrim
The film takes viewers back 183 years before the events of the “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy. In the land of Rohan, King Helm Hammerhand is besieged by a group of Dunlendings led by Wulf, who is intent on avenging his father. While Helm retreats to the fastness of the Hornburg, it falls to his daughter Héra to lead the resistance of her people.
Only 55% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given their seal of approval to the movie so far, but 85% of audiences who have watched “War of the Rohirrim” preview screenings say the return to Middle-earth is a worthwhile trip to the theaters.
When will ‘The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim’ be streaming on Max?
Because “The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim” is distributed in theaters by Warner Bros. Discovery, it’s a foregone conclusion that the movie will stream on Max once it’s no longer an exclusive in cinemas and premium video-on-demand (PVOD) rental and purchase platforms like Prime Video.
How long it could be is a bit of a mystery. WBD Animation hasn’t released a movie theatrically in several years, so we’re better off using epic fantasy and sci-fi movies to try and gauge the theatrical window for “War of the Rohirrim.”
“Dune: Part Two” took just 67 days to reach Max after arriving theaters originally, and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” was on Max 84 days after coming out in cinemas. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” didn’t take much longer, coming out on the streamer 91 days after its theatrical release.
I think 84 days sounds about right for “War of the Rohirrim” as well, and if that prediction is borne out, it will join other live-action and animated Middle-earth movies on Max on Friday, March 7.
