‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ heads to theaters, but is it streaming?
The new ‘Lion King’ prequel shows how the great king of the Pride Lands ascended from a young cub to a noble leader.
When audiences get to know Mufasa in 1994’s “The Lion King,” he is already the stately monarch of a rich, highly populous kingdom. But how did he ascend to that level? Fans can see for themselves in Mufasa: The Lion King,” which makes its official theatrical debut on Friday, Dec. 20. We’ll tell you more about the movie, and when we expect you’ll be able to stream it below!
Key Details:
- “Mufasa: The Lion King” follows the tale of the titular lion from his days as a cub, all the way through his ascension as king.
- As a Disney film, the movie will no doubt stream on Disney+ first.
- Viewers could be in for a wait of less than 100 days to see the film streaming at home.

Watch a trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King”:
“Mufasa: The Lion King” takes viewers back to the time when the regal lion was nothing more than a curious cub. After becoming separated from his own family, Mufasa meets a young lion named Taka, who convinces his parents to let him join their pride. The two soon become inseparable, but danger is never far behind, and the adventures they embark on together will shape the lions they become when they grow up.
Quality-wise, the film is hovering somewhere in the middle of the road. Critics have given the movie a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though there’s a good chance that fans nostalgic for the first movie will be kinder to the film once they see it for themselves.
When will ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ stream on Disney+?
It’s pretty easy to say where “Mufasa: The Lion King” will stream on-demand when it leaves theaters. As one of Disney’s cornerstone franchises, there’s no doubt whatsoever that the movie will be available on Disney+, joining “The Lion King” and other TV shows and movies that it spawned.
The wait might not be as long as it was for some other films released by Disney in 2024. “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2” took 109 and 103 days to reach Disney+ after their respective theatrical premieres, but I’m not sure “Mufasa: The Lion King” will see quite the same box office as those movies. The 2023 movie “Elemental” was available in theaters and on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms such as Prime Video for 89 days before hitting Disney+, and that window seems more applicable to “Mufasa” in my eyes.
With that in mind, I will predict that “Mufasa: The Lion King” will stream on Disney+ starting Friday, March 21, 2025. That’s 91 days from its original release date and will allow Disney+ to continue its pattern of releasing new movies on Fridays, allowing for more family viewing time over the weekend.
