Lin-Manuel Miranda Postpones Premiere of Hulu Documentary in Solidarity With Nationwide Protests

Mere days before it was supposed to make its premiere, Lin-Manuel Miranda has decided to postpone the debut of his new Hulu documentary, “We Are Freestyle Love Supreme,” to be in solidarity with the nationwide protests against racial injustices, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The film was to be available on the streaming service this Friday. A new release date is yet to be revealed.

The documentary showcases Freestyle Love Supreme — the performance group comprised of Miranda and his friends/longtime collaborators — long before their “In the Heights” and “Hamilton” fame. The film follows the group as they put together “We Are Freestyle Love Supreme,” an off-Broadway show they used to put up before they made their way to the main stages of Broadway.

“Today our country, our world struggles to reach an end to this systemic racial injustice, intolerance, police brutality and hate,” Freestyle Love Supreme said in a statement on Twitter. “We add our voices to that fight. We are for the freedom of expression, creativity, inclusion, equality, and most of all, love,” the group continued. “Our work has always centered around creating a safe space for those ideals to flourish. Our show does not exist without the operations of brilliant black artists that created two of our most beloved American art forms, jazz and hip-hop.”

Back in May, Disney announced the film version of hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” will be coming to Disney+ earlier than expected. The 11-time Tony Award-winning musical, which was supposed to hit theaters in October 2021, will now be available on July 3.

Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, “Hamilton,” was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also produced the show along with Jeffrey Seller and Thomas Kail, who directed the film. In addition to the 11 Tony Awards, the musical has also garnered a Grammy Award, Olivier Award and Pulitzer Prize.
