HBO Max’s Mobile App Rakes In 1.7 Million Downloads in First 2 Weeks

The timing of HBO Max’s May 27 launch may not have been ideal, but it seems the streaming service has fared well. According to a new report by Sensor Tower, the WarnerMedia-owned service’s mobile app managed to snag 1.7 million downloads within the first two weeks of launching. Its best day was May 28 when it clocked in 337,000 first-time installs from Apple App Store and Google Play users, the report showed.

While getting to 1.7 millions downloads in two weeks is a huge feat, given the app launched in the middle of a pandemic, compared to other services that recently launched, the number isn’t as impressive.

Disney+ was downloaded 15.5 million times in its first two weeks of availability last year. In the two months after Apple TV+ launched, it signed on 33.6 million users. Even Quibi, which has been largely panned for a failure to launch after raising close to $2 billion, scored 1.7 million downloads in its first week,” Forbes reported.

HBO Max’s numbers are not expected to spike anytime soon. According to Forbes, second week downloads were 30 percent of first-week downloads and they are expected to continue dipping as time goes on.

The streaming service may also find themselves losing potential viewers when they will lose key content come July. Last week, news broke that the platform will no longer carry nearly all of the live-action DC films available to “Max” streamers on July 1.

In total, HBO Max has 31 DC movies (live-action and animated), with 25 of them available exclusively to HBO Max subscribers. Of those, there are 17 live-action DC films available on HBO Max, with 13 of them considered “Max” exclusive content. Of those, “Supergirl” (1984) is the only live-action DC film that was available at launch that will still be on the service after July 1.

Some of those disappearing on July 1 will be “Batman,” “Batman Forever,” “Batman Returns” and “Batman & Robin,” as well as newer films like “Justice League,” “Suicide Squad” and “Wonder Woman.” Leaving both HBO and HBO Max on June 9 is “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies.”
