Netflix to Launch Kids Playlists: Less Scrolling, More Watching
Netflix to Launch Kids Playlists: Less Scrolling, More Watching
Disney+ was the first paid streaming service to roll out playlists that automatically started the next episode of a given show this year.
On-demand streaming can be a huge benefit for parents who are otherwise at a loss for how to keep their kids entertained. But there can still be pitfalls with on-demand services, especially if arguments erupt over what to watch next or if a given show runs out of episodes. Netflix is trying to help solve that problem, following the lead of Disney+ by revealing that it will make new playlists of popular kids shows that automatically play a new episode available to customers in the next week or so.
Key Details:
- Netflix’s new kids show playlists are likely to be only available to subscribers.
- Playlists will be available globally from Sept. 24 onward.
- The new playlists will feature themes like animal-related shows, titles for bedtime and more.

Disney+ got the trend of automatic playlists going earlier this month. These playlists work a lot like free ad-supported TV channels; they curate a list of episodes from a given show or selection of shows, so that when the previous episode concludes a new one starts up without forcing the viewer to pick a new title for themselves.
What's On Netflix is first to report that Netflix will be launching similar playlists of their own. The report does not specify whether these playlists are only to be available for paid Netflix subscribers, but it’s highly likely. There’s also no data yet as to which Netflix plans will be able to access the playlists, or whether they will feature commercials. Disney+ is thus far reserving its playlist feature only for ad-free streaming customers.
The report does indicate that the playlists will be available to subscribers in every global territory Netflix can be found in by Tuesday, Sept. 24. All of the lists will be rated TV-Y7, so parents don’t have to worry about an episode of a show like “Bridgerton” or “Stranger Things” sneaking in there.
What Shows Will Be in Netflix’s New Playlists?
According to What’s On Netflix’s report, the streamer will roll out 10 playlists, each built around a particular theme. Many of the lists share some of the same titles, so it will bear watching to see if Netflix curates each so as to show only episodes related to the theme of a given list. Each playlist will include a mix of four to six titles each.
