New NVIDIA Shield update is ‘breaking’ Google home on newer models
A software update for NVIDIA Shield streaming devices is causing major issues for some owners.
The NVIDIA Shield is one of the most popular high-end streaming players on market, and with good reason. The device enables viewers to stream content in Ultra-High-Definition 4K, supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and even allows the owner to transform it into a gaming rig using built-in GeForce NOW Cloud Gaming. But as reported by 9 to 5 Google, some NVIDIA Shield owners are noticing a big problem on the device thanks to a new software update released by NVIDIA.
Key Details:
- A new hotfix for NVIDIA Shields is breaking Google Home for some devices.
- The 2019 models of the NVIDIA Shield are being affected by the issue.
- As of now, the update is only being enabled for 2015 and 2017 NVIDIA Shield models.
Even though it’s been several years since the last NVIDIA Shield model was released, it’s still supported with occasional updates. NVIDIA is preparing to unleash a third hotfix to the 9.1.1 software version that was released in 2022, but there’s a major problem with that hotfix for some Shield owners: it breaks Google Home.
The issue is known to affect 2019 models of the streaming player, but so far it appears that 2015 and 2017 models are unaffected. Thus, NVIDIA is only enabling the new hotfix for these models, while it waits for Google to fix the problem so it can launch the update for 2019 Shield owners as well.
The hotfix is designed to offer a “security enhancement” for 4K DRM content playback and provide support for parental controls in French. There’s no current timeline for its wide release to all customers, but it’s in beta testing and available for 2015 and 2017 NVIDIA Shield owners now.
The NVIDIA Shield is one of our favorite devices to recommend at The Streamable, thanks to the numerous capabilities and high-quality streams it offers customers. Even with the software problems it’s still a good buy, new owners should be aware of the issues currently cropping up with the latest hotfix for its software.
