Amazon Fire TV Devices Add ‘Continue Watching’ Row; Which Streaming Apps Are Supported?

The Continue Watching feature will make it far easier for users to resume their most recently-viewed title on various streaming platforms.

Amazon is continuing to make updates to its line of Fire TV smart TVs and streaming devices. Fresh off the heels of its last facelift, the Fire TV user interface is adding a new feature that will make it easier to get down to streaming: a Continue Watching row that shows users the most recently-watched titles from their streaming subscriptions.

  • The new Continue Watching feature is rolling out to Fire TV devices now.
  • Currently, the feature is compatible with Max, STARZ, MGM+, Prime Video, and Freevee.
  • Support for Peacock and Tubi accounts will be added in the next few months.

What Are the Details of the New Continue Watching Feature on Fire TV?

The new Continue Watching row on Fire TV devices will appear at the top of the home screen, so users will be able to see their last-watched titles right away. Customers who have not done so already may see a prompt to share their streaming history with Fire TV when they next turn on their devices, and doing so will allow them to make use of the Continue Watching row.

Continue Watching will show audiences the next episode of a show if they turned off their device after finishing a previous episode. If they pause a show or movie mid-playback, it will also appear in the Continue Watching row, and users can resume the title from the point at which they left it.

At launch, Continue Watching will display titles from Freevee, Max, MGM+, STARZ, and Prime Video. Titles from Peacock and Tubi will be added in the coming months, and users should keep an eye out for more streamers to partner with Fire TV for the feature. As it stands, however, titles from Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and others will not appear in the Continue Watching row, whether users are subscribed to those services or not.

What Other Updates Have Come to Fire TV Devices Lately?

This year has seen a near-constant stream of updates to Fire TV devices, including several in the past few months. In late October, Fire TV devices were updated so as to automatically begin removing streaming apps the owner had not accessed for more than 60 days. This feature is meant to speed up loading times on Fire TV devices.

In late November, Fire TV’s interface was updated yet again to provide more functionality for viewers of the Fire TV Channels platform. Now, Fire TV Channels viewers have access to the NBA's free ad-supported TV (FAST) channel as well as a new “Favorites” page that allows them to curate a list of their top channel options.

Most recently, Fire TV devices began auto-playing full-page ads whenever the user opened the home screen on their smart TV or streaming player. Though some users have found this mildly irritating, it has also been a big help to holiday shoppers, and viewers can change their ad experience in the settings section of their Fire TV device.
