Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are Coming to Samsung, LG, and VIZIO Smart TVs

Following yesterday’s announcement that AirPlay 2 would be coming to Samsung TVs — both LG and VIZIO announced today that they will also be adding support for the streaming protocol.

With AirPlay 2, you can share your iOS device or Mac directly to your Smart TV. This means you can play music, movies, podcast, or display photos on your screen without the need for an Apple TV.

By adding HomeKit support, customers will now be able to use their iPhone or iPad to control their Smart TV. This means you can pause, rewind, fast-forward, change volume, and power the TV from your Lock Screen, Control Center, Home App, or by voice with Siri.

With AirPlay2 and HomeKit, customers will also be able to send a video to their TV by voice. For instance, “Hey Siri, play Game of Thrones on my living room TV” will AirPlay the show to a compatible Smart TV.

AirPlay 2 and HomeKit will be available in LG, VIZIO, and Samsung’s entire 2019 line-up. Additionally, 2018 Samsung TVs and any VIZIO TV with SmartCast will be able to use it with a free software update later this Spring.

Many believe the recently renewed interest in partnerships with TV manufacturers comes as Apple is expected to launch a Netflix-competitor this year. They plan to mix original programming, third party services, and the ability to subscribe to other services through Apple, like the deals the Amazon has with HBO and Showtime.

The company has partnered with A24 who produced films like Lady Bird and Moonlight to make films for the service and announced a multi-year deal for original shows from Oprah. They have quietly acquired programming including a J.J. Abrams limited series starring Jennifer Garner, Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, a futuristic drama from Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence, and thriller series from M. Night Shyamalan.
