As March Madness Approaches, Sling TV Announces Auto-Record Feature to Automatically DVR All Games

The live streamer will allow users to record all games from a specific league and keep them for three days.

The Men’s and Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournaments are getting ready to tip off and Sling TV is introducing a new feature that will help ensure that you don’t miss a single second of the action. On Thursday, it was announced that the live TV streaming service is unveiling a new feature that can be set up to automatically record games from a host of college and professional sports leagues. The function goes live just in time for hoops fans to take full advantage of it as March Madness kicks off next week. However, subscribers must pay $5 extra per month in order to have access to the feature.

  • Sling’s new Auto Record feature allows users to record all games from a specified league or sport.
  • Customers must opt-in to use the feature and pay the extra $5 per month to get the DVR Plus add-on.
  • All games recorded via Auto Record will be available to watch for three days.

Sling’s Auto Record is designed to allow users to opt in to automatically recording men’s and women’s college basketball, NBA, NHL, MLB, WNBA, college football, NFL, English Premier League, Bundesliga, and La Liga Santander games. If there is a game from one of the selected leagues on a channel included in the customer’s Sling package, it will be recorded and saved for three days following its live broadcast. This way, sports fans don’t need to worry about missing the next 16-seed upset, major buzzer-beater, or historic performance, because they either didn’t remember to record a game or because they couldn’t foresee which game would end up being a must-watch.

“We understand the passion our viewers have for sports, and with the introduction of Auto Record, we’re enhancing their streaming experience like never before,” DISH group president Gary Schanman said. “At SLING our priority is to make streaming simple, flexible and to fit into the lives of our users. Auto Record does that.”

Does Sling’s Auto Record Feature Cost Extra?

Technically the Auto Record feature does not come with any additional cost for subscribers, but those customers must be signed up for the DVR Plus add-on, which costs an extra $5 per month, in order to access the function. DVR Plus comes with 200 hours of recording capability, but anything saved via Auto Record will not be counted toward that total, especially since the recordings will only be available for three days.

In celebration of the new Auto Record feature, Sling is offering the first month of DVR Plus service for free to any new or former subscriber.

How Does Sling’s Auto Record Feature Work?

Once a customer is signed up for DVR Plus, they will need to opt into Auto Record. From there, they will be able to set up what they want to automatically DVR. From there, they will be able to watch any of the games that they missed and fast forward just to the most exciting parts of the games.

Currently, Auto Record is only available to users watching on Roku, Samsung Smart TV, VIZIO Smart TV, and Xbox devices. All other devices will see the feature come to their Sling apps in the coming weeks.

What Other Sports Features Does Sling TV Have?

In preparation for March Madness, Sling has upgraded its sports scores feature, and those updates are rolling out now. The feature is available via a dedicated row on the Sling home screen row. There will be a carousel of games and scores that allow viewers to see all of the available matchups and their scores, letting them dive into the action of the best game as quickly and easily as possible. Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV users should already have the improved feature when they update to the latest version of Sling, and other devices will receive the upgraded version soon.

Sling also offers its popular sports side view feature that allows fans to watch a game in a small window when they are watching on the Sling website. This way, when you have to work while March Madness games are on, you can still pretend to stay busy while focusing on the action.

Sling TV is a live TV streaming service that helps users save money with the option of two distinct plans. The $40/month “Sling Orange” plan offers about 30 channels, including Disney Channel and ESPN. The $40/month “Sling Blue” plan offers about 40 channels, including Fox and NBC local channels.

Sling Blue or Orange+Blue users in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco pay a $5 surcharge because they have access to their local ABC affiliate.

If you subscribe to both plans, you’ll receive a $25 discount (or more depending on the current offer). Sling also offers various “Extra” packs that you can add to your subscription.

Sling is great for the budget-conscious cord cutter who just wants to watch live TV, but doesn’t need the most comprehensive channel selection.
