Details Revealed About Disney Plus’ ‘Rouge One’ Prequel
An untitled Star Wars’-inspired “Rogue One’ prequel is planned for Disney+. Lucasfilm is at work on a series about Rebel Alliance spy Cassian Andor’s origin story, before his life-changing mission with the Rogue One team.
Filming begins this year and the series is expected to be released sometime in 2021.
The prequel’s showrunner is Stephen Schiff (“The Americans”). Tony Gilroy (“The Bourne” series, “Michael Clayton”) will write and direct.
The Illuminerdi broke news of the untitled Cassian Andor series, which follows Cassian and his sidekick K-2SO, voiced by Alan Tudyk. Two characters expected on the prequel are “Mundo,” at ages 9 and 13, described as a Latin male, and “Cinta,” a 5-to-7-year-old Latina female who is virtually identical to Mundo in personality and appearance.
Cassian tells Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) in “Rouge One” that he’s been at war with the Empire since he was six, which makes an origin story and the traumas that shape this intriguing warrior a solid basis for a prequel.
The “Star Wars” template is loaded with familial tragedy, starting with Luke Skywalker.
In addition to the Andor project, there is a second “Star Wars” live-action series in the works. Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in his prequel trilogy days.
