Disney+ to Become First Streamer with IMAX Enhanced Titles; Queen Concert Film Will Be First to Use Tech

Disney+ wants to bring the power of IMAX to your home screens. The streamer has announced that starting May 15, it will begin offering select titles with IMAX Enhanced sound, a dynamic experience offering the highest fidelity for superior listening. The announcement marks Disney’s latest move to improve its streaming platform and is designed to get the company one step closer to becoming the “ultimate streaming destination” that company CEO Bob Iger believes Disney+ can be.

The first title with IMAX Enhanced sound to arrive on Disney+ will be the “Queen Rock Montreal” concert film which first debuted in IMAX theaters this year. That film captures performances from Nov. 24 and 25, 1981, when Queen took Montreal by storm. Its addition to the Disney+ streaming library on May 15 will add to its already-impressive inventory of music specials and concert performances.
Following the debut of “Queen Rock Montreal,” Disney will apply the IMAX Enhanced sound technology to 18 of its Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Like the Queen movie, these MCU titles will debut with IMAX Enhanced audio as of May 15.
What Marvel Titles Will Have IMAX Enhanced Sound on Disney+?:
Viewers will only be able to watch these titles using IMAX Enhanced sound if they have select devices compatible with DTS:X technology running on Android or Google TV. Sony, Hisense, Sharp, Xiaomi, and others make such devices, and owners of certified DTS:X enabled AV receivers from manufacturers like Denon, Marantz, and JBL will also be able to enjoy the experience at launch.
What Else is New With Disney+?
The biggest change to come to Disney+ recently is also its most substantial makeover since its launch. Hulu content is now available on Disney+, uniting entertainment options from two of the company’s streamers on a single app for the first time and kicking off speculation that Disney is building toward the eventuality of a single, giant streamer with all of its sports and entertainment content.
That integration included some big behind-the-scenes technical updates, including changes in the metadata of Hulu content to make it more easily discoverable. Those upgrades could help Disney+ enhance its personalization and make streaming a more customized experience for each customer who uses the platform.
Disney is due to begin cracking down on password sharing this summer, so viewers who want to share the new IMAX Enhanced titles on the streamer with friends and family that don’t have Disney+ accounts will only have a limited time to do so.
