Frndly TV Customers Can Now Filter DVR by ‘New Episodes Only,’ But Still Can’t Just Record New Episodes

One of the most-requested features on Frndly TV is rolling out to customers now… sort of.

Frndly TV is continuing to upgrade its interface to make for a better watching experience.

One of the improvements live TV streaming services have made over linear cable and satellite plans of the past is the ability to digitally record shows and movies at no extra monthly cost. DVR is now an included feature with most live TV streaming plans, and even the low-cost, skinny channel bundle Frndly TV offers Cloud DVR on two of its three plans. However, until recently, Frndly’s DVR did not allow subscribers to record only new episodes of favorite shows like “When Calls the Heart,” but a new update to the feature lets viewers sort out which episodes are new to them, and which are simply syndicated reruns.

Key Details:

  • Frndly’s DVR now allows viewers to sort TV episodes in their DVR by new only.
  • “Technical limitations” still prevent Frndly from letting customers record only new episodes.
  • The update is just the latest attempt by Frndly to build a budget-friendly and highly functional streamer.

The newly updated DVR feature on Frndly TV was first announced on Friday when the streamer gave word on X (the social media site formerly called Twitter) that it was rolling out the new functionality. Frndly customers have been clamoring for an option to record only new episodes of their chosen TV shows, and while the updated DVR doesn’t allow for that, it does let viewers filter recordings to show only new episodes.

In the social media posting, Frndly says “technical limitations” prevent it from going the extra step and allowing subscribers to just record new episodes, so it has essentially done the next best thing. Viewers will find the “New Episodes Only” option in the drop-down menu for any show with newly-recorded episodes in their DVR library.

Frndly TV offers unlimited Cloud DVR on two of its three plans. Its Classic plan ($9.99 per month) allows viewers to keep their recordings for up to three months, while the Premium plan ($11.99) grants customers the ability to keep them for up to nine months at a time. The streamer’s $7.99 per month Basic plan does not come with an unlimited DVR.

As a family-focused streaming platform, Frndly TV offers a selection of around 40+ live channels, focused on favorites like A&E, Hallmark Channel, and Lifetime. Viewers won’t find much in the way of live sports or big-name entertainment channels on Frndly, but it carries a wealth of programming that viewers of all ages can enjoy together. Each of the platform’s packages comes with a weeklong free trial ahead of a customer’s first payment.

Viewers can now add additional family-friendly services to their Frndly TV subscription and get access to even more on-demand content. In April, Frndly launched a channel store which allows customers to add subscriptions Lifetime Movie Club, A&E Crime Central, History Vault, and Great American Pure Flix on top of their Frndly plan and keep the services all on one bill. Each comes with a seven-day free trial, and viewers can bundle A&E Crime Central, Lifetime Movie Club and History Vault together for just $9.99.

Frndly is adding new features to improve its viewing experience all the time, and its DVR update is just the latest example. Subscribers to the service with a Classic or Premium plan will want to check their DVR section, as the ability to filter by new episodes will arrive very soon if it’s not there already.
