The oldest marathon in the world is back. On Monday, April 15, the 2024 Boston Marathon gets underway, with coverage across ESPN2 and ESPN+. What was originally dubbed the “American Marathon” is one of the six World Marathon Majors, alongside the Tokyo Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon and New York City Marathon. Coverage of the 2024 Boston Marathon gets underway at 8:30 a.m. ET on ESPN2 and ESPN+, with the latter carrying additional streams starting at 4 a.m. ET. The Boston Marathon has its roots back to 1897 when John J. McDermott of New York took first place out of a 15-person starting field. The original route of the “American Marathon” ran 24.5 miles from Metcalf’s Mill in Ashland to the Irvington Oval in Boston. Today, it’s one of six World Marathon Majors, and runners must qualify for the race by running a certified qualifying marathon within the designated time for their gender and age group.

The 2024 Boston Marathon will see both the men’s and women’s champions from last year return to defend their titles: Evans Shebet (men) and Hellen Obiri (women). If Shebet can repeat, he’ll become the first men’s three-time winner in Boston since Robert Cheruiyot managed to do it four times.
