About ‘#CyberSleuths: The Idaho Murders’ Premiere

On Nov. 13, 2022, University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Madison Mogen were found dead in a blood-soaked off-campus house. For weeks, the local police struggled to come up with any potential suspects, which led to speculation about whether or not Moscow, Idaho’s tiny police department was in over its head. With no solid leads, a vacuum was created, and online true crime followers filled the void.

The new Paramount+ docuseries “#CyberSleuths: The Idaho Murders” tells the story of a small group of amateur detectives on social media platform TikTok as they attempt to sort through all of the rumors surrounding the brutal murders of four students at the University of Idaho.

These amateur investigators, who are not required to follow police procedure, comb through digital evidence visit the crime scene, speak to the victims’ friends and families, and come up with potential witnesses and suspects of their own. An entire online community is formed singularly focused on the solving of these crimes. However as the investigation gains momentum, innocent people see their entire lives upended by the work of these cyber sleuths, which ultimately calls into question whether or not they are doing more harm than good.
