Aside from the romance between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, perhaps the biggest story in sports this year has been the continued dominance of Iowa Hawkeyes’ guard Caitlin Clark. After having a transcendent 2022-23 season, she has elevated her game to breakthrough superstar status, averaging 32.4 points per game, Clark is on the presipous of becoming the leading scorer in the history of women’s college basketball. She takes her first real shot at stealing the scoring crown on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. ET against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a game that will air on Fox. Clark 38 points away, which for most people would feel just a bit out of reach, but is certainly in the realm of possibility for the most electric scorer in basketball. Washington legend Kelsey Plum currently holds the NCAA women’s basketball scoring record with 3,527 points, but Iowa’s Caitlin Clark is closing in on her; she currently has 3,489. When the Hawkeyes take to the court on Sunday, Clark will need just 38 points to tie — and 39 to break — Plum’s record. It just so happens that when Iowa and Nebraska faced off just over two weeks ago on Jan. 27, Clark went for 38 points.

Clark has had 38 or more points in six games this season, including three of her last five outings. In her career against the Huskers, Clark is averaging 34.75 points per game, but has had at least 38 points in three of the eight matchups, and has never been held to less than 30.

Barring anything tragically unforeseen, Clark will undoubtedly end up breaking the record either against Nebraska on Sunday or Michigan on Thursday, Feb. 15. However, that won’t mean that her race to the top of the scoring charts is over.

After she inevitably passes Plum, next in her sights will be LSU’s Pete Maravich. Despite ending his collegiate career in 1970, Pistol Pete still holds the all-time NCAA points mark at 3,667, just 140 more than Plum. So, with six regular season games remaining, Clark is on pace to become college basketball’s all-time leading scorer on Senior Day in No. 2 Iowa’s regular-season finale against No. 5 Ohio State, the only Big Ten team to beat them all season.
